As if appointments with the dentist and our tax accountant today weren't depressing enough, I just read this news. This has been my favorite opera company on the west coast, but they say they don't have the money to continue next season.

It isn't just opera companies. The highly respected Philadelphia orchestra has been teetering on bankruptcy

(possibly as means of getting out of its pension obligations), and the Minnesota Orchestra was locked out for

many months (and the St. Paul chamber orchestra for a substantial time also).

 

The professional orchestra in Albquequerque got restructured in the past few years, and the Oakland (CA) symphony

a few years before that.
