I'm in the market for a very vintage rolex, to replace one

that was stolen years ago. [i'd had it for 38 years]

Specifics: 1601 Blue linen ROlex Stainless Steel date.

I can deal with a non-original bezel, and prefer a Jubilee.

Dates are 1968-1970.

It looks kinda like this:

Thanks for any help!

You may want to put 'Rolex' in the search engine that Daddy has provided. Recently a M-F member claimed his Rolex watches were overrated or costume jewelry.

Go Piaget!

I said they were over rated, not costume jewelry. if you're going to try to stir the pot, at least do it properly

I love Rolex watches. They are the most durable and most dependible of any watch that I have ever owned. I would not however buy anything like that on line or in an ad. They are probably the most duplicated watches on the planet. Go to a reputible dealer. Most sell used ones, and if they don't have the particular one that you are looking for, they most likely will have a reliable source. You will pay a little more, but at least you know what you are getting. Vintage Rolex's are fairly plentiful, so finding just the right one, should not be a problem.

In my opinion, great advice Bigvalboy. I love my two Rolex watches for similar reasons. A buyer might also be well advised to buy with a credit card. Get the miles or award points and have some added confidence in case something goes amiss with the watch and the selling dealer hesitates to make good. Probably doesn't apply with this purchase but I read over the weekend that the least taken advantage of credit card benefit (that some cards have) is price matching.

Proper:

""that's a no go. I shop neiman's enough to know that without paper proof, they won't take anything back. wont even get a store credit.

I laugh at the kid asking for a rolex. most over rated time piece out there. the few I've owned, I have hated and kept in storage""

I keep all my watches in storage! I find keeping track of time so tiresome, don't you? http://www.boytoy.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Just for giggles I went to that site (mostly out of curiousity to see how much was being asked for them) and found a match

for what I think the OP wanted:

$3250 for a friggin' watch? What kind of a loonie would pay that much for a watch?

I loved how Unicorn made his point by picturing the Canadian coin with the loon depicted on it. I personally don't understand why people have to have STATUS SYMBOLS that are so ridiculously overpriced. Such a waste of money to use as a façade of who you truly are.

I recently bought an impressive collection of watches, so this topic is right there at the top of my mind. I generally skip Rolexes as I don't find them attractive. Sure, one has to have the right time, but after that, it's about the watch looking good. Storing them in an accessible vault will help you get your value for them, because if they are just going to gather dust, then really, why buy them?

If my elephantine memory is accurate, in the past year or so there was a TAG Heuer thread AND its (satirically-intended) underwear-themed counterpart. Given the nature of this site, can any of us criticize another's spending habits in good conscience?

Of course, this post is coming from the broad who hopes The Weather Girls will release "It's Raining Bens." T needs a down payment fo' a new buggy! :(

that's your opinion, but not the definitive one

a nice watch is not a status symbol to those who can truly afford it. it's just a time piece.

funny considering how some folks here spend thousands on escorts. pot calling the kettle black

Thanks, honcho, but the word "linen" is the important one. Look at the texture here:

versus here:

I bought my first one in 1974 for $175 (it was part of an insurance settlement), 50% off its list price of $350.
