There was an item in yesterday's paper that Chris Kluwe, the punter for the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL, asserted that he was released from the team because of his outspoken support for same-sex marriage, and that he accused one of the assistant coaches of making homophobic remarks during team meetings.

The Vikings have announced that a former Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court and a former Justice Dept trial lawyer will lead an investigation of the accusations.

Only a few years ago, no player in the NFL would openly support gay anything, he would be afraid to accuse a coach of homophobic remarks, even if he did, hardly any newspaper would consider this newsworthy, and no team would go to the expense of an investigation.

I think this speaks volumes, and I certainly congratulate the owners of the Vikings for taking this seriously. We have come a long way!

Whether it is Aaron Rodgers or someone else, my understanding is that there were three or four NFL players who were going to come out last year during the off-season. I have a gut feeling that any plans to publicly come out were scrapped when Kluwe was cut by the Vikings.
