Hello, my merry peers! I'm back from Russia, where I had a wonderful time. No escort input, I'm afraid, but I did have an afternoon's dalliance (unpaid!!!) with a syrian bodybuilder who was in St. Petersburg for a competition.

(Yet another check on my "Things to do Before I Die" list)

And... I saw "Pirates" in Moscow, where it was called something along the lines of "Pirati Karabienskii". Johnny Depp is adorable dubbed in Russian. I'll have to see it again here though, as I had not a clue as to what they were saying.

But I want to ask you all if anyone out there is familiar with a recent french film, just out on DVD called Beau Travail. My local video hole has elected to carry it only on DVD, and I am still a vhs kinda gal. Ostensibly, its a very homoerotic film about a group of french foreign legionnaires in the desert of Djibouti.

Any one out there seen it? I'm debating buying a dvd player just to watch this film.

DVD!

I've seen players as cheap as $40 at Fry's (Southwestern US chain). You get what you pay for, but good name-brand players can be had for around $150.

It's really worth it, especially for movies you may want to watch again and again, or certain parts in slow motion... ahem. Look for an A-B feature too, best if it's easily activated one-handed with the remote ;o).

The best part is the movies don't wear out, and except for some cheap crappy disks you can easily skip between the segments you like.

Guest pshaw

"Beau Travail" is essentially the Billy Budd story in a Foreign Legion setting. I caught it on Sundance Channel about a year ago and it still pops up there every once in awhile. I enjoyed it well enough - nice looking guys without shirts moping around - but I would say that while there are many good reasons to buy a DVD player, buying a player just to watch "Beau Travail" is probably not one of them.

When you do buy a DVD player, you may want to consider a region-free one. Some of the best gay (non-porn) films are coming from Japan (Region 2) and China/Hong Kong (Region 3), but often can't be played on most of the players sold in the US, which only play Region 1 DVDs. Or get a subscription to the Sundance Channel - the gay-themed Chinese films "Lan Yu" and "East Palace, West Palace" were on there just last month. Both are very good.

I thought it was a boring movie (and I tend to like French films). There are better movies to rent featuring shirtless well-built men.
