Anyone know what's got Boston hotels through the roof?

I've been looking into a visit to the area, but I've checked dates for all this year, and as far out as March...and the prices for hotels are just exorbitant even on the 3rd party bidding sites. October looks totally out. September is looking out too.

Just for comparison, I stayed in 2009 I stayed at a couple different 3-3.5 star hotels downtown for under $100 a night. Right now, things are in the $200-500 range. I usually don't like to go above $100 including taxes, and clients know I always tend to stay in fairly nice hotels for the most part.

Whats going on?

October = baseball playoffs and world series. These venues book up a year in advance just in anticipation. What's left gets sold at premium.

Ditto... I had a similar problem a number of years ago when trying to book something for a convention... and yes, this starts convention season as well. Therefore, that further puts a strain on the available number of hotel rooms In fact I ironically also recall from that year that quite a number of Red Sox fans would not have been disappointed if their team got knocked out of the playoffs simply to open up some hotel space. Of courses those were the days of the Sox totally folding toward the end of the season... They did and fortunately things opened up a bit. However, this year I'm not so sure that's gonna happen!

The Sox are pretty much definitely going to the playoffs...how far they get - well, we shall see, but things are feeling pretty good right now...;)

All the things already mentioned. I grew up in Massachusetts. October is also prime tourist season for fall change in the color of leaves. Also throw in the Patriots games, and even Boston College, the years BC has a good football team.

You must be very very old to recall a good football team at BC, Doug Flutie is a very sexy grandfather now (or he could be)

I figured it had something to do with the Sox. I googled their schedule (even though I've played softball here and there, it's not a sport I really watch). But, I wasn't sure because even on the non-game days they didn't have much selection. And, I looked as far in advance as April of next year just to play around and it still seems different than what I can recall. I know they are die hard about their team, but FFS these games tend to screw shit up for other people wanting to visit a place with other interests who aren't interested in the team. Oh well, at-least I checked it out before going. From what it looks like, the next 2 months look out, ugh...I was ready to book my flight this month too.

Yes, I am very very old. LOL

I was visiting Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park in the fall of 2007, and watching a lot of football on TV during the trip. I remember watching several Boston College football games with Matt Ryan as the quarterback. BC may not have been ranked quite as high as when Flutie played, but the team was surely in the Top 10 because the games were telecast nationally not just in the East. For the record, I have not attended a Patriots or BC game in person for many years.

i did well at the four points by sheraton in revere. Only took 9 minute drive to downtown and my clients loved coming there because of easy access and free parking. got nice room for 125 a night. excellent big hot breakfast buffet as well.
