The verdict didn't say self-defense was proven. The verdict said that murder WASN'T proven. (i.e. the verdict reflects that the prosecution did a lousy job, IMO.) A young man was shot dead, and what the verdict means is that our own judicial system failed to help right that wrong. Zimmerman is not really getting off scot-free, though - he will have to watch his back for a very long time.

 

But, back to the topic - part of me applauds this man for trying to challenge the homophobe - and part of me was indeed hoping to god that the bigot wouldn't get so angry or flustered that he wound up striking back more violently. It didn't happen, thank god, but it could have.

You've made an excellent point; however, not all states have that Florida law.

 

I've read news stories of a home owner who shot the intruder of his home in the back, and since the "intruder was shot in the back he must have been fleeing" so the home owner was found guilty.
