I think in the instance described in the story, the ease of availability of sex partners has created a problem for the relationship. However the situation would be much the same whether it is hiring an escort or going on Grindr or Manhunt. The dial-a-man aspect offered by escorting could have edged out those other methods a bit by facilitating hook-ups, but the issue was the imbalance between one partner wanting more sex outside the relationship than the other.

 

In terms of "vice-versa" there are instances where seeing an escort could be part of maintaining a long-term relationship. As the story mentions, a significant number of long-term gay relationships have some aspect of being open, and getting together with an escort can be an option for satisfying that desire in a safe way with understood boundaries. Of course I'm biased here, but I've had many clients who are in long-term relationships where bringing me or another hired guy in is a way to satisfy the itch without worrying that I'll be bugging them later, trying to break them up, visiting them at work, or at the very least having trouble getting me out the door when finished.

 

I thought the point the article makes at the end is interesting, that marriage counselors will be facing more instances of marriages that allow some degree of openness. Nothing new to gay couples' counselors, but still something interesting to a society that has a lot of ambivalence about sex outside marriage. It's all about balance!

Exactly. I sometimes think of escorting as a kind of "self-medicating" procedure for guys in long-term relationships.
