Gentlemen & man *****s (wink)..

Thank you for all the input!

I think with me it's more about "making a change", as I've been on that site since I started my escorting career.

I agree with Trevor that they do NOTHING as far as support of "us" as a community, & their customer service BLOWS, but....being based in Vegas I get a decent amount of work from clients visiting from the Southern states & smaller towns in the mid-west.

They DO give you three travel ads (with a platinum subscription), BUT I was getting calls from DC long after I had left.

The new pricing seems RIDICULOUS to me..

Xander I LOVED your post!

I think I'm pulling the ad.

In my email this morning...

"Dear Chris Eisenhower,

Recently we added some new personal stats. Please login to update your profile. Additionally, you now have the ability to display a cost indicator of your rates. Your options will be $, $$, $$$, or $$$$.

Also, when you login on a mobile device, be sure to turn on your GPS location services. By sharing your location, you will show up in more searches and significantly increase the number of clients who will find you.

Please login and update your new stats and rates so that you will show up in as many client searches as possible. This information will go live in 7 days so please login ASAP."

Okay... so I've logged in and

am checking out the "new personal stats." I'm not really sure why or who thought "open to long term relationship - check yes/no" would be helpful or needed. And what am I supposed to choose for a rate indicator? I never agreed with you guys about the whole rate issue before... but the new changes are not only NOT helpful, but could cause problems with "stalky" clients and actually drive away business if people search by "$."

Chris -- that is even worse. One to four $ signs? Really? So are you McDonald's or Morton's Steakhouse? In what market? Do they give a range like urbanspoon of what a $ means? That is stark raving nuts.

And "are you open to a relationship?" Lord knows there are all sorts of creepy clients out there who would pounce on that and drive you all mad. That has got to be the craziest idea yet.

As we were taught so wisely in Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "Run away. Run away. Run away".

Ok question in general. I'm assuming this statement is in comparison to Rentboy- meaning Rentboy is more supportive of the community and maybe has better customer service (Tyger of Portland wouldn't agree with you. He had trouble with Rentboy years ago and as a result hasn't advertised on them since then).

But if Rentboy is so supportive and if 'we' appreciate that- then why are there always so many negative comments about the Hookies awards. Obviously it's to drum up business for them and the escorts- but if they are so supportive of us- shouldn't we be supportive of them and want their business to make money?

Ace obviously it's your dime. And you know your economics better than everyone. And Lord knows I'm not being paid by M4RN ,and have been just as frustrated by their dead ads as anyone- but you state that you get clients from them - and then in the next sentence you say you are probably pulling the ad. Now if the number of clients you get from them doesn't make up for the cost of the ad- that's understandable. Or maybe you hate their business model so much you are taking a stand on principle. But just on the face of it- the two statements really made no sense. On the other hand, most of my actions make no sense- even often to me- so nothing says that your actions have to make sense to anyone other than yourself- and I am the last person in the world who should be lecturing ANYONE on the logic of their actions. It was just I was surprised by your last sentence when you admitted to getting clients from them.

Fair 'nuff (but only a start on what would need to be fixed). I say it'd be more effective to simply expand rentboy into those smaller markets, which happily would be one likely outcome of the death of Men4RetchNow.

Kevin Slater

No disrespect, Kevin, but if it were that simple. why hasn't it already happened? Rentboy is available to escorts in all the smaller markets but more are choosing M4RN. Do you think it's a cost issue or lack of awareness/marketing?

I think that this is a classic "chicken and egg" situation. In some markets, clients use M4RN because there are more listings there, and then escorts advertise on M4RN -- despite its pitfalls -- because it is where the clients are used to looking. Other than this popularity, nobody seems to have anything good to say about it.

So, I'm really hoping that M4RN's recent changes break this cycle, and lead both escorts and clients to another option, like rentboy or rentmen. I don't think that there is anything that makes M4RN inherently better for small markets, so I think that once the cycle is broken, it will fade away into obscurity, where it belongs.

But escorts have to lead the way - I can't simply 'choose' to only use RentBoy or Rentmen if there's no one on those sites to suit my taste.

I let my ad on that horrid little site go and never looked back.

As a client, I too wish that m4rn would die, die, die.

I don't get the frustration and the extreme reactions M4RNow is getting here. I'm wondering what really happened to get Kevin that upset and to "look back" every time M4RN is mentioned.

Actually M4RNow brings business (for me) and fully justifies the price they are asking. The site has been profitable for me and as long it is, I'm OK to pay for an ad there (only when I'm in the US, that is). The site is worthless overseas.

Apparently it works/has been working for "Maxwell Smart".

I don't think the amount of business justifies the price they are asking. When I first signed up it was $29.95 for the 10-day trial. And you could do that every 10 days if you wanted to rather than be forced to pay the full month rate, even though it was more expensive that way. Now it went up to $49.95. We're competing against craigslist and hookup apps, why are they raising the rates as if there's been this surge in new clients? There are less clients, so why are they putting the rates up? The only reason m4rn is still bringing me business is because I keep a constant travel schedule. I've watched many of the local ads in my area, they all turn to zombies at some point.

I wish you could upgrade beyond the next service level during your ad subscription. So if you get Silver, you can only upgrade to gold. The trial was useful when a trip was planned. You probably don't see it being a big deal because you also have a busy travel schedule, so you can reach clients in many more areas. It's the local guys who don't have that luxury who are suffering and end up as zombies. Men4rent throws out a handful of clients and then that's it. Meanwhile, craigslist is getting new 'clients' in everyday. That's what I have to use locally because men4rent hasn't been getting me enough locally. I could not use it at all and be okay. At-least craigslist is free, and anyone can say whatever the hell they want about it...but when I have the patience to want to deal with it, that's what I use.

If we did a test and seen if I could find a client faster from men4rent or craigslist, guess which one I will find one faster on? Again and again and again? Granted, I don't use it hardly when I'm traveling simply because you are able to find that new men4rent client segment. I don't want to hear about it being low class because I've looked for cars on there are you have the beaters right along with Mercedes, Jag and Infiniti. So no reason we can't do the same.

Like Steven I must concur that m4rn still brings in GOOD clients for me. All I can do is report my experiences...... but the direct link I use is http://www.rentmen.com/mikeyusatop. now as far as the $, $$, $$$, and $$$$ I must say that when I recieved that email I just was speechless. I chose $$$ for my 200 hourly rate but it is so open to interpretation as to be utterly unhelpful.

If I felt I had a choice, I would NEVER use M4RN; however, in going into cities that aren't responsive to RentMen and RentBoy I have no choice. I really do dislike M4RN. I tried them once when I first started four or five years ago, and my impression is no better now that they have removed prices and added their abysmal restaurant pricing guide feature.
