I am considering taking a week long trip to Cape Town in mid March. Planning on staying a week. Can anyone tell me what the rentboy scene is like and/or make recommendations on where to stay and what to do? I am concerned that it might be a better 3 or 4 day destination and a week might be a little too long. Also, being considered are Barcelona/London and Rio.

CAPETOWN is a fascinating, beautiful city. A week will not be too long if you engage yourself in the culture. Go to the wine country and to the coast. Do a google check; check out http://www.Tripadvisor.com,

http://www.fodors.com. Book at http://www.booking.com or http://www.agoda.com. {In terms of escorts, I can't help you, for I did not engage the services of these hunks when I was there in 2002 for four days.}

Of all of the cities you listed, if I had to select only one, I'd go for Rio de janeiro 1st and Barcelona 2nd. ...been to Rio 8Xs since 2002 and staying for two weeks or longer.

It has been awhile since I was there... Stayed in the wharf area at the Table Bay Hotel. Nice place and great location for all of the wharf area. Not far from the gay bar scene or the spa... Friend of mine stayed out farther at a gay guest house, can't remember the name but not convienient to downtown. You can spend a day going down to the Cape of Good Hope, see the penguins and the seals on seal island. Table Mtn was cool and a must do in my opinion. You could then head up to the wine region for a few days. I didn't have time for that.

Crime in SA can be high, take care and use official cabs. Fun town. Wish I was there when the Belami models were hanging out at the bars... :)

If you will be leaving from the US, I can't imagine going as far as Cape Town just to sample boys. If you can get a nonstop or direct from the east coast, its still an 18 hour flight that crosses 7 time zones. To go for less than a week with a trip that long on each end, in my views, is nuts. Even if Rio takes as long to get to, its only a couple of time zones.

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world in terms of its natural setting, and its surrounds are even more spectacular. The boys are nice too -- just thinking of those Boer boys makes my heart leap -- AND ... remember that SA has just about the highest rate of HIV infection on the planet. I would give anything to be there when George Duroy takes his stable of horse hung studs and kinky angels down there, but it wouldn't be the only reason for a visit, and I would want to stay two weeks next time. Not only is there a thriving gay community there, but gay marriage was written into the first post-apartheid constitution, so the legal system is cool. Local customs in other parts of the country vary, but Cape Town is cool.

That gaycapetown4u site looks great, and is recommendations make sense to me, having been there.

Good luck!

I went recently on a family trip, spent 10 days there, and it was nowhere near enough

Cape Town is one of my favorite cities. The Portswood or the Commodore Hotels are nice and in the VA Waterfront Complex, which affords a lot of shops and eating options in an environment that is safe at night. Cape Town is pretty safe during the day - at least the neighborhoods you are likely to go in - less so at night. The Vineyards Hotel is in the Newlands area, closer to Table Mountain and very nice hotel. Once you see the mountain, the waterfront and company garden areas, you've seen Cape Town and can get out to Simonstown to see Boulder Beach and the penguins, Cape of Good Hope, Camps Bay (for the beach) and then up to the wine country or take a trip on the Garden Route. As for boys...Cape Town can be a little on the disappointing side. A couple of local guys advertise on rentboy, but be careful as a couple of guys also advertise there and run a scam operation. The local gay website has occasional listings and from time to time brothels spring up, but can close down just as fast. There are a couple of gay bars/hangouts and the local guys are friendly and always enjoy meeting Americans. If the goal of the vacation is boys, Rio is a much better option, followed by Barcelona (for beach/site seeing opportunities) followed by London (no beach, but lots of good looking boys and an active gay scene).
