Everyone thinks of NYC as being incredibly expensive which it can be but there is also great entertainment that can be had for little or nothing. I've just been going over the Event Calendar at Julliard http://www.julliard.edu and there are some terrific concerts and performances which cost nothing. I figure any student who goes to Julliard has to be very talented so even if they aren't stars (yet) they must put on a good show.

Wondering if anyone else has come across some inexpensive and fun things to do in the city?

Great topic for a thread.

My favorite free thing in the city is walking on the High Line. http://www.thehighline.org/

Folk on a budget should be aware that admission at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a suggested donation. http://www.metmuseum.org/

Tourists always seem to get a kick out of the Staten Island Ferry. http://www.siferry.com/

The Chelsea galleries are always fun.

I've yet to take advantage of free kayaking on the Hudson, but mean to. Someone has to find Jimmy Hoffa, right? http://www.downtownboathouse.org/

The Rockefeller Center tree lighting ceremony is Nov. 28th. I remember years ago before it became this big tv special you could just walk over and watch them turn it on. Now you can't get anywhere near it. But a few years ago, completely by accident, I was passing through the area the night before the lighting and the Rockettes were rehearsing their number. I was about 10 feet from the stage and there were hardly any other people around except for the technicians. I can't promise this is always the case but if anyone is nearby it might be worth checking out the evening of Nov. 27th. It was fun and free and very New York.
