Xander, actually the female condom -is- a condom, not a dental dam. It creates an actual barrier and if used correctly it can effectively prevent the exchange of fluids, minimizing the risk of transmitting infectious diseases. I recommend you to go to a pharmacy and buy a couple and try them, first on your own, to familiarize yourself with them, and then with a partner. They are a little weird but once you get the hang of it they are really easy to use. It's a fun thing to do and you never know, you may love them. Many swear by them saying that it has provided the most pleasurable experience; personally I think that both as a top and as a bottom they are uncomfortable and a little coarse, as if you had a rough bag of canvas in your ass or as if you were fucking a crunchy sock. Personally I have no problems with condoms, so I will stick to the classic male condom but it is good to be familiar with them. I don't use them but in our role of sex educators and facilitators, the more familiar and knowledgeable we are about disease control, the better we will be able to do our work.

I've topped a guy who wanted to use a female condom, and personally, I hated it. It's not pleasurable and feels a bit like fucking a trash bag because the female condom is larger than the anus, which means you feel every fold in the condom (and not in a ribbed for pleasure sort of way either). I suppose female condoms are great for a bottom who wants to ensure safe sex (particularly with a top who refuses to wear a condom or "conveniently" is out of them), but in my experience, for the top, it is in no way an adequate substitute.
