Here you go sexy. I asked this self-same questions a few weeks back.

What I have been told is that unless you want to rent a car, your best bet is to stay around the areas by downtown. Almost all the potential clients I have spoken with have all expressed a willingness to come to me or are near enough to cab or take the subway to.

My kind of town or yours?

Bobby,

If you plan spending time in the city DO NOT stay in Evanston or Skokie. You would need a car unless you want to navigate the suburban/city public transportation system.

Stick to No. Michigan Ave (Mag Mile), Gold Coast, River North or Loop (downtown).

I just returned from Chicago & stayed at the Westin on N. Mich Ave just feet from Water Tower Place. I booked it on Hotwire for $75 a night which was a killer deal. If you spend alot of time online then realize that they DO NOT offer Starwood Turbo Internet Access. Dial up rates for local call are $2 for one hour & 10 cents per minute afterwards. The Marriott on North Mich Ave has the same rate as the Westin.

BUT, if you are a SPG member (which is a freebie to sign up online) then just go to drop your bags off in your room & call down to speak with the manager to discuss hotel policy. I told him I was coming down so I could speak with him face-to-face. When I met him, I explained to him that my company requires me to work and communicate with them online so I spend LOTS of time in my room working on the computer. I told him NO WAY would they approve an expense that would probably add up to almost $200 which is an insane figure for a business traveller. Don't you think? He agreed & made a note on my account that each call would be $2 flat. If I hadnt raised some hell at the beginning of my stay, my incidental charges at check out would have clocked in at 167.95... instead, I paid $23.50 (with a movie(Adaptation) included in that total lol) Bottom line...raise hell beforehand to be clear and so you dont have to deal with shit at checkout. Hotwire has fantastic deals but you never know until you've paid in full what the incidentals policy might be at the hotel. Be prepared!

I've also stayed at the Courtyard on Hubbard which is in great shape. They have free dial up or STSN high speed at $12 for 24 hrs. It's very close to N. Mich Ave & Gentry's<a gay piano bar is right across the street> in case you might want to meet a client outside of the hotel.

Hope that helps,

John

Like Barry says, a definite No to Evanston or Skokie. Mag Mile is it.

I can recommend Le Meridien from firsthand experience, having housed business associates there on numerous occasions. They don't just like it, they rave about it. Located in the new Nordstrom complex. Rack rates routinely under $200.
