obviously I have not seen the documentary but I have been to Providence RI before. I am surprised that they have that significant amount of male prostitutes to warrant a documentary.

MM, I think you're right. I've seen stories about this project before. It's mainly

about street hustling. Given what I think is the overall decline in that activity,

it would be surprising to see more than a few cases in Providence. Possibly

the caregivers have to vigorously chase the rare cases down.

I have spoken to a long time resident of more than 25 years in Providence, and he has reiterated what BC and mmk has said that the gay community has greatly decreased over the years. He indicated that their is evidence that a significant amount of straight developers have inundated the area with real estate investments. Much the same way that members here have mentioned the decline in Key West. My question would be, why Providence? Then again, having not seen the documentary, the location may not be of any significants, but rather the subject matter itself maybe the only thing of importance.

The above comments are most informative. I noted from Facebook that this is about Project Weber, which was discussed in The Forum some time ago. And here's an excerpt from the documentary. You'll probably cringe at the first 30 seconds, and then see more discussion about male street hustling and the substance abuse/homeless population. Is that a big problem in Providence, Rhode Island?

BC, thank you for posting this, having worked with substance abuse and homeless gay teens at the Village gay and lesbian center in Hollywood for many years, the problem has permeated almost every facet of the gay community. In many respects I consider it so rampant that it is like a cancer. The success rate for recovery is dismally low. It is a sad fact that I have come to accept.

I lived in Providence for 3 years in the early 80s. There was two gay bars and a rather obvious hustler crowd around the bus station in the downtown area. I have returned on several occasions and the two bars have changed ownership and orientation several times with one still being a gay bar. The bus station has been torn down and the entire downtown area redone. i believe there is still a small hustler area but similar to most areas, street trade has turned to internet.

For the most part, the gentrification of Providence made the city and the surrounding areas much nicer than when I lived there. i must say that the city was quite a nice place to live before the gentrification took place.
