For those of us old enough to have been transfixed by Neil Armstrong's walk on the surface of the moon, the announcement of his death is sad indeed. There have been few genuine heroes in my lifetime; he was one and he made us all proud to be Americans in 1969, a time when so much seemed to be cascading into doubt and despair.

I saw this news first on the crawl at the bottom of ESPN, which hardly ever considers any non-sports news worthy of mention. He was one of the truly unique historical figures.

He apparently attended at least one Trekker's convention.

 

(was reading on the blog of an oboe playing friend who won the talent contest that she told her son to get his picture taken with the man who first walked on the moon ...).
