I am very saddened to learn of this. A few weeks ago Goober (George Lindsey) passed as well. I believe the only remaining major cast members left are Ronny Howard and Jim Nabors.

He have pleasure to millions, and will continue to do so for a long time, I suspect. A pretty good legacy!

This is the second loss for my adopted state of North Carolina in recent months; legendary guitar picker Doc Watson also died recently.

(P.S. Note the byline -- Dennis Rogers resurgens! Although the piece has likely been in the can for some time.)

AdamSMith, thanks for sharing - there was a lot I had forgotten (e.g., his show was a spin-off from a Danny Thomas episode). (and it's always a pleasure to read Dennis Rogers! :) )

The first Hollywood victim of Obamacare! Perhaps it was the old AARP ads he did years back....

P.S. My sympathies to Aunt Bea and Otis!

He was one of a kind in an era that is never likely to be repeated... wholesome laughter, and not at the expense of anyone else. RIP you are missed, but will not be forgotten.

I liked him more as Ben Matlock. I've watched those more times than I can count. I also liked his role in the tv movie Murder in Coweta County. A fact based story that happen here in ga in the late 40's He was a mean son of a bitch in that film
