I recently saw a headline saying "Transgender Men...."

Does this mean that it was a man trapped in a woman's body or a woman trapped in a man's body?

btw, the article didn't really go into any more detail regarding why it was important to the story.

Thanks.

NO, born Male but identifies as female after transitioning..

Not to quibble over time-lines here, but born male is correct. However, most identify as female before transitioning and must absolutely do so if surgery is involved.

I believe BP is correct.

He is absolutely correct, I misread the post. However, the rest of my post I believe to be true.

Sorry, I re-read my post and it is unclear. A transgender man is a person born female who identifies as a male or has had sex reassignment surgery.

I think you are all correct, and incorrect, depending upon the person's transition stage. If a person has the genitals and other physical characteristics of a male, identifies as a female, and has not had surgery they could be called a transgender male. After making the transition to the female gender, they are no longer male. But they are still transgender. Are they transgender female? If so, that makes them the same as a person who has the genitals and other physical characteristics of a female but identifies as a male.

All of the transgender people I know through my volunteer work at an LGBT center refer to themselves as "male to female"or "female to male" transgender when referring to their being transgender. When they refer to their gender, they usually use "male" or "female" unless it is within the context of being transgender. I have never heard any of them use the term "transgender male" or "transgender female."

As much as I hate to say this, I'm really glad that this has caused this much confusion. At least I know that the article/headline was messed up and ambiguous, and it wasn't just my ignorance causing me to not understand.

People who are curious and ask questions are never ignorant. The ignorant ones are those who claim to know it all without ever bothering to check. :)

Not to split hairs, but you are both right. "Ignorant" can mean either "uninformed about a particular subject" or "knowing little or nothing." ErieBear was using the first definition and you are using the second definition. Admittedly, I usually hear the word used to mean "stupid" more often than "uninformed about a particular topic."

Which begs the question: What is an ignorant transgender man?"

Whatever HE/SHE is, he/she still remains ignorant. And with that, I'm now calling Cher on my Believe hotline...
