Starting June 7th thru the 15th at the Abrons Arts Center http://www.abronsartscenter.org is a performance and visual feast (according to the NY Times). In the article is a quote that the goals are to "break through dominant ideas that limit and marginalize queer art, by creating a new concept of queer as a wider platform for excellence in arts, capable of tracking, discovering and interpreting new trends while daring to speak openly about the norms that constitute society and art practice." Well, this sounds like it could be fun.

It might be fun, but I would not go an event that called itself queer. My loss, maybe, but I don't endorse the concept of taking a slur against gays and trying to turn it into a mainstream word.

I thought the quote from the NY Times was funny in that "art speak" way and you wonder what the hell they are talking about? As far as using "queer" I suppose it's kinda like African Americans using the "N" word. If we do it it's okay and it takes away from some of it's power as a hurtful slur supposedly.

Seems to me that by calling it "queer art" in the first place IS limiting and marginalizing it. :-)
