The problem is that people have become so conditioned to doing a series of calculations with this kind of problem that they forget how to use their brains. Also, she probably realized he was right when he pointed it out but was trying to save face.

 

And the guy? He sounds like an average Joe Six Pack who landed a pretty girl through sheer luck. You know he snapped her up and worshiped her when they began dating. (If he had tried this stunt then, she'd have been long gone.) But this type always starts to show a sense of entitlement eventually.
