I went out last night. Usually I'm not into the bar scene, but I enjoy having an occasional drink or two with friends.

To my surprise I saw so many straight guys and gals completely drunk and out at 3 AM. What's the point and where's the pleasure of throwing up in the street? Know your limits, guys. Many of these youngsters live for the weekend and their only pleasure is to get drunk on Saturday night. I don't get it, but hey to each his own.

One word....youth. I have noticed that in WEHO many of the young guys are better behaved than in straight bars, and while a lot of the guys are clearly intoxicated, I personally have never seen anyone 'falling down' kinda drunk and I have never seen anyone get into a fight. This is by no means anything other than a personal observation.

As we age and mature, I think our priorities change. I'm glad I have some wild party days behind me but I am sooo happy I have moved on from the craziness of last calls and gutter-puking!

I don't get...Many of these youngsters

Sometimes, youth is wasted on the young.

In American colleges, getting drunk parties have taken on new meaning. It's like a new sport has emerged. With the steadfast popularity of study abroad programs, the drinking/party/game culture has spread to all corners of the world. I guess the young view it as a right of passage. At 20, I certainly had my own independent thinking issues, which did concern my parents. Luckily, I never used alcohol or drugs as a serious source of recreation, or proving myself an irresponsible adult.

One can only hope that after a few bouts of puking in the street and pissing in bed, one would come to his/her senses. If they don't, it might just be a future alcoholic is born.

I think to some extent alcohol and drugs are the result of being bored, of not having enough "useful" work to do or the prospect of same. The "dumbing down" of America (and the world, to some extent) with many jobs being service jobs has directly contributed to this problem. How long does it take to train someone to say, do you want fries with that? How interesting is that kind of work?

How many young folks want to be engineers, scientists, etc. these days and what are their career prospects if they do?

There is always "work" for those willing to apply themselves but it is far easier to just go 9-5, M-F and fry your brain during the week-end.

I hear you loud and clear Steven. It's never made much sense to me either. I live near the French Quarter here in New Orleans--quite possibly the epicenter of continuous, stupid-ass, out-of-control drinking in the U.S. Our bars are open 24/7 and virtually never close. Most Friday & Saturday nights on Bourbon Street, the few revelers who are NOT stumbling around and puking their guts out are the ones who stand-out.

To me, there are five levels of intoxication:

1. Moderately buzzed.

2. Strongly buzzed.

3. Moderately drunk.

4. Strongly drunk.

5. Wasted.

When I was in college and my 20s, I liked to go to No. 4 (strongly drunk). Sometimes I'd slip into Wasted, but I never ever liked that.

As I've gotten older, I don't like to get drunk at all. No. 2 (strongly buzzed) is plenty for me, and I seldom do that ... but it is nice to have a moderate buzz before letting someone fuck you!

But even in my wildest days, I never understood the "let's get wasted" mentality. I wanted to remember my exploits!

I never did like to get drunk. The few times I did were horrible and I always regretted it. I agree that a light buzz is pleasurable when hanging out with friends but I've yet to experience sex while under the influence? Does it add a great dimension to it?

Lohengrin - what are you - 16? If you never experienced being a little buzzed on booze and have sex at the same time, what have you been doing? Screwing on cookies and milk or kool-aid? (Don't take offense - I'm just being a pain in the (o).) But I agree- the few times in my life that I've overindulged and been sick have been awful - being hunched over the toilet and hurling forth just doesn't square with my own self-image.

When I was younger and going out to clubs, I never could understand the appeal of getting so blotto on booze or drugs that one could barely walk; and yet that was some guys' m.o. for a typical weekend evening. Everyone makes mistakes and misjudges their tolerance from time to time; but there were guys who routinely did this. I sorta wonder what ever became of them.

No offense at all, Phil. I'm actually a 16 year old nun so I find the vice of drink distasteful in the extreme. ;)

In all reality, though many singers drink like fish, I've found that alcohol dries my vocal cords too much to indulge in it too often, especially during heavy performance weeks. As such, I'm usually the designated driver for those of colleagues who can handle it...the bitches. Boring, I know but there it is.

Finally, no self respecting bottom worth his salt would screw on cookies and milk. I have my ethics, after all. :D
