The link below says it all.

But strictly speaking, even the gayest among us would have wanted to take a spin on Welch's tricycle JUST TO HAVE A LOOKY-LOO at what we were missing, right? :)

I can't believe there's no replies.

Nobody drooled over Stephen Boyd back in the day?

Excerpt from the link:

Welch: “For my first trip to New York, when we opened the movie, we were both staying at the Plaza Hotel, so I thought, ‘Here’s my chance!’ So Darryl Zanuck took us all out to dinner at 21 and on the way back to the hotel we shared a cab. I said to him as we were going up in the lift, ‘So Stephen, would you like to come in for a drink?’

I remember him very well, but like Rock Hudson and a lot of other stars of that era, the studios always kept their gay men under wraps, so to speak. However, I am surprised that there is not more than the indirect quote from Rachel to talk about. I don't think her comments would necessarily mean that he was gay... I would want a lot more information... but he certainly was a good looking HUNK.

An aside for what it’s worth. Supposedly director William Wyler wanted to imply, in his film Ben-Hur, that there was more to the relationship between Mesalla and Ben-Hur than mere plutonic friendship. He was perfectly aware that if he approached Charlton Heston regarding the matter Heston would freak out. Believing that he would get a more positive reaction from Stephen Boyd he approached him regarding the idea. Boyd thought the idea was a total hoot especially if he could pull it off without Heston being aware of what happening. Knowing this watch the film again if you get a chance; paying particularly attention to the early scenes. Boyd’s body language and looks are masterful.

Sorry Sheila, but in 2012, this is just Retro. Looks old, tired and dusty now.... and even in its time, I was more of a "Village People" kinda guy....

Several people took credit for the gay subtext (so obvious now it's not really subtext). Some sources say Boyd approached Wyler with the idea. More likely, the idea came from Gore Vidal, who was brought in to re-write Karl Turnberg's wooden, un-shootable script. Whoever brought the idea to Wyler, he is said to have responded, "Good idea, but don't tell Chuck." Years later, when "Chuck" heard about this angle, he denied its existence in the film and said Vidal didn't receive screen credit because what he wrote was unusable. Vidal challenged him directly on this, drafts and notebooks in hand. When you see the film, Messala/Boyd's attraction is palpable. He says to "Chuck," "We'll be (significant pause) friends," and there's a spark in his high the reflects all the way to the balcony. Boyd always has a handsome second at his side. The man holds Messala's head as Messala dies after the chariot race. And then there's the scene in the baths.....and one. Boyd is beautiful throughout.

He was also quite a hunk in "The Best of Everything." Watch it and tell me you wouldn't like him hanging around waiting for you after work as he is in the final scene. Celestial choruses take it away.

Oh well now that you bring up the Ben Hur connection, I do see the appeal. And I always thought he was hot in that movie. The under text attraction between the two characters seemed obvious to me.

I remember him well and always thought he was hot. Never really made it big in Hollywood. Should have been nominated for an Oscar for his role in Ben Hur. Married twice. Gay? I don't know, but I don't get the vibes. Died of a massive heart attack on the golf course in his forties.
