And yet some of the largest ships sail away every day, several times a day "close to land" with no problem.

Love the pic you posted...But Steven, are trying to compare 'Holland America' with 'Carnival' Cruise lines. LOL LOL... Don't think that is possible to do. That my friend is apples and oranges.

In my book it's like mixing eggs and door knobs and coming up with egg knobs.

There is no way to compare Holland America and Carnival.

I wasn't even trying to compare Holland America with Carnival.

For those of you who have sailed or cruised out of Venezia it's a reminder how close the big cruise ships come with terra firma. And you get the best view over Piazza San Marco from deck 13 ... unforgettable.

The only time I've ever encountered a 'small problem' with panic onboard (it was an all gay cruise, so you can imagine the impact :) ) was when passing close to Piazza San Marco ... even with the help of the experienced "pilots" guiding the ship through the waters. Speaking of delicate maneuver ...

many of my friends keep telling me to try a cruise, they all love it. Could you guys tell us what lines you feel are safe? I travel by plane many, many times a year, all over the world, and never let a plane crash make me think about stopping. But some of you have said you avoid certain lines. Could you share the good ones with us, I just might still take the plunge -------------- eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww what a bad choice of words!

I usually cruise with Celebrity (owned by Royal Caribbean). They're top-notch among the big ships, and quite a bit less expensive than the more premium lines (Crystal, Seaborn, etc.)
