You need better news sources.

Gay marriage is legal in Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Spain, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, and Argentina. The list of countries with legal civil unions or domestic partnerships is considerably longer.

(As a result of yesterday's election, Spain's situation may change.)

The countries that outright ban gay marriage are Uganda, Honduras and Latvia.

Just a hypothetical question. I live in Massachusetts where gay marriage is legal. If I met someone from another country where gay marriage is legal and we decided to marry and reside in one of the countries, would that make the national or international restrictions easier and more timely. I have a feeling that the answer would be No because gay marriage is not recognized by our federal government. Anybody know?

Not sure what you're asking. The Defense of Marriage Act prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex unions. There are immigration cases in the news regularly where half of a couple faces deportation because the federal government does not recognize their marriage granted elsewhere.

That said, Ricky Martin bought a property in Spain because he and his partner can get married there. Go for it!

Thus explaining the paucity of pink chuppahs in Riga.

I congratulate you, Lookin - always in good, impeccable taste. Do you run a marriage consulting company? Surely that bridal bower (or pink chuppah) would be fave for anyone contemplating tying the knot.

As another poster pointed out, marriage is now legal in Mexico City. Mexico's Supreme Court has ruled that the other states must honor Mexico City marriages under Mexico's equivalent of the full faith and credit provision of the Constitution. So although you cannot get married in other Mexican states at this point, a Mexico City marriage is valid throughout the Republic.

As for marriages that take place in the U.S., I know that Brazil recognizes them for various legal purposes. I suspect that the other countries that allow marriage (or equivalent civil unions) also will recognize them, even if our own federal government doesn't.
