One of my pet peeves is when an escort advertises as "blonde" and clearly is not. To me, blonde hair is yellow to white (not gray). Brown is brown, light brown is light brown, neither of these is blonde. Is there some marketing advantage to saying that you're blonde??

Anyone else have a take on this?

I don't know about marketing advantages, but a blonde is a female.

The male version is blond.

(Technically it means "fair color" -- i.e. not dark)

I think, depending on how the light hits one's hair (in photos and/or in person), blond(e) hair can sometimes seem darker. Conversely, I've met blonds whose (blond) body hair can seem so light in color you might almost think it's white, sort of.

And then, there's always this sequence from Sondheim's Sweeney Todd:

TODD (excitedly, to Anthony): We will write a letter to this Mr. Fogg offering the highest price for hair the exact shade of Johanna's — which I trust you know?

ANTHONY: Yellow.

TODD: Not exact enough. I must make you a credible wigmaker — and quickly.

(sings)

There's tawny and there's golden saffron,

There's flaxen and there's blonde ...

(speaks)

Repeat that. Repeat that!

ANTHONY: Yes, Mr. Todd.

TODD: Well?

ANTHONY (sings):

There's tawny and there's golden saffron,

There's flaxen and there's blonde...

TODD (speaks): Good.

(sings, with Anthony echoing in counterpoint):

There's coarse and fine,

There's straight and curly,

There's gray, there's white.

There's ash, there's pearly.

There's corn-yellow,

Buff and ochre and

Straw and apricot...

Countryboy,

'Blond' can apply to either sex, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. 'Blonde' can only apply to a female. Unless... you mean?

Ignore Deej, he's obviously French! :p

blonde vs blond

Is 'blonde' a color? :p

Actually 'blonde' comes from the French une blonde and I think Canadians (paging Mark Gordon and her Majesty the Duchess to chime in) are more strict as to the difference between blonde/blond and masseuse/masseur. I've seen Americans using both independently of the gender.

Exactly. Oh, and isn't about time Quebec succeeds? :p

Bostonman,

I always believe in leaving such unresolved disputes in the capable hands of a Frenchman, such as Voltaire, c. 1753.

Quebec is, "...a country covered with snow and ice eight months of the year, inhabited by barbarians, bears and beavers".

Sounds like our kinda town, huh, Bostonman? :p

That's only because we're stupid. :p

I couldn't have put it better myself Munroe, 'out of the mouths of babes and sucklings' Psalms 8:2. :p

I don't think that you're stupid.

It might be because of the fact that English language doesn't have genders (unlike Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German and Dutch)

which has a big advantage - it makes the language easier to learn ... :)

I had a German TA in college ( 'had' as in she was my teacher) who to my eyes had brown/brunette colored hair. She said that in Germany it was considered blonde. I think she used the term 'dunkelblond'.

Also Rick Munroe has always said Derek Ross has very light blond body hair, but in a lot of pictures it looks dark ( I'm sure Derek would corroborate this but he doesn't get on the Forum as often as Rick).

Really, SD?

Munroe insisted that he would pay for his own dinner.

Rich. insisted that she would pay for her own dinner.

Munroe, if I'm damn lucky, will provide a seriously fattening dessert! :p

English at this point in it's development has 'natural' gender. Unless referring to a person, or possibly an animal of known sex, most other objects are neuter. "He" and "She" don't count They are personal pronouns. Steven was talking about having to decline ( change) the form of articles or adjectives depending on the gender of the noun they modify. Or what's even worse-- in languages like Hebrew changing the verb form depending on whether the subject is masculine or feminine.

LOL Yeah, I'm not stupid, but the U.S. as a whole is not doing very well in that department. We rank 18 out of 36 developed nations in education. Have you seen anything written by younger Americans these days? It's almost like reading another language.

You have a great memory, Rex! Yes, he's totally a blond in every way, but it sometimes photographs dark (esp. if he's wet).

It's because U.S. Americans don't have maps!

I'd cut Miss South Carolina some slack. I know people who lose all their intellectual capacities when they have to talk in public ... even more talk live on TV.

Now, I have great respect for Americans and I don't think Americans are stupid.

This below is for entertainment purposes only and has no real value. Take it with a grain of salt.
