Fire Island as a Manhattan day trip, possible?

I often find DAY TRIPS to the Island anti-climatic. the travel time actually lasts longer than your time on the island, and you are always thinking about Departure time to make your connections.....

 

All in all a worthwhile experience, but personally, i prefer to stay a bit longer. And seeing action in the MEAT RACK is part of the "experience" , while being eatten by the mosquitoes and horse flies is the worst part.

The host was very welcoming, and we were well treated, so I relaxed a bit, but panicked whenever someone offered me something to smoke or inhale, and I shrank into a corner when someone pulled out a needle.

Needles? They had big roided up guys there with big bellies?
