Hi guys, new poster here. I am taking a trip through Costa Rica at the end of the month and I was hoping someone could give me a few tips about the escort scene there. I know prostitution is legal there but the web only seems to have sites for females. Thanks in advance.

The article is long but it is informative. The article confirms that prostitution in Costa Rico is legal. It also confirms that since 1971, homosexuality is no longer a crime provided the activities are between consenting adults.

 

The article further discusses that Costa Rica remains homophobic. Furthermore, the article states that anyone over age 40 is considered too old to participate in gay sexual activities.

 

Worse yet, look through the section that discusses male prostitutes and gay bars.

 

If the article is correct, I suspect that you will not be having a great time while in Costa Rica. If you have a choice in the matter, try Brazil.

Thanks for the link imrthr. I was in Costa Rica last year and didn't really find that article to be very relevant to the culture I experienced. I am 52 and met a very cute tico in a discoteque and was cruised by a couple of others. I was hoping someone had some information about where the male escorts could be found as I didn't have the need last year but I know they must exist somewhere. Thanks for any help that can be given.

I've been going to Costa Rica for about 5 years now. The guys are everywhere and seem to be attracted to older Gringos..at least the green in our wallets. I have never experienced any homophobia and get along great with all the neighbors. There are lots of gay bars and the National Parque is know for its cheap and available boys. There are many areas to meet the guys during the day also. There are 2 bath houses but I've never been to either. You do have to be careful about leaving shiny things laying about when you have guys over but other than that I have never had any problems before.

Is National Parque a bar, and where is it?

Where are the "many areas to meet during the days"?

What're the names of the bath houses, and do they have garotos de programa?

Parque National is the national park close to downtown.(Anybody in San Jose can give you directions. (It is only a 5 minute walk from downtown hotels) There are usually 5 -10 guys doing business every night. Prostitution is legal so there is no problems with the police. You can meet guys just hanging out in the Plaza de Cultura which is centrally located downtown and Parque Central which is a few blocks away. Like I said I don't go to the baths so I don't know how they are but the biggest is Espalis close to downtown. Puchos is a stripper bar where you can buy the dancers and take them back to your place but it is easier just to pick up guys in the bar. Most guys don't ask for money but it is expected. $20 or 10,000 colones is the going rate (the dancers are more... $50 for the bar and $30 for the dancer). Most will stay overnight for this amount. There are other bars...La Avispa which is packed on Sundays and lots of guys looking for Gringos and Bochinches which is also very good for cruising. There are a couple of houses of prostitution with guys but I have found a better group of guys at the bars and on the street.

Sorry to be the wet blanket here but you should be forewarned. San Jose can be a dangerous place. Do not walk the streets at night and alone. Many thieves who will beat the crap out of you and some have guns. I would not go to Parque National at night looking for a hustler or anything else.

Any city can be dangerous if you walk alone at night and San Jose is no different. People are out and about downtown until around 10 pm then it is a good idea to catch a cab. The guys at Parque National sit on the benches surrounding the park so you can shop without leaving the cab if you feel uncomfortable. I have never had a problem in San Jose - never had the crap beat out of me and never had gun pulled on me but I don't walk around drunk and I am aware of my surroundings and know where I am going. (I wish I could say the same about Atlanta where my business was broken into 3 times) There are some bad neighborhoods you don't want to walk through so know where you are going. I bought a house 5 years ago in Barrio Amon which is near Parque National and my experience is that it is relatively safe.

Interesting discussion Brian. I have plenty of experience in South America but not in Central America. What is the physical look of the ticos? I am into very built manly men. My impression (perhaps incorrect) is that ticos are more of the skinny twink type. Would I find what I like there?

Ticos are mainly from Spanish descent and range from dark to light skin. Other than most having dark hair and eyes their looks vary a lot. I used to hire a lot in the US until I discovered Costa Rica.(For what you would pay an hour here would last days there). It is only a 3 1/2 hour flight from Atlanta. There are also lots of Colombians and Nicaraguans in Costa Rica. The indigenous Costa Ricans are almost extinct. The Ticos are also very passionate in bed. I have been with lots of straight guys there....yes they are actually straight and are better in bed than most of the escorts I have hired in the US. (Ticos are the best kissers in the world..my opinion) There is not the disdain for older guys as in the US. Now the bad news.... I go for the twink to athletic type (guy next door) which are plentiful. I do not see the muscle, body builder type much there. It may be that I am not looking for that type but I think it is different from what you would see in Brazil. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response. What you describe is pretty much what I expected. There probably is the occassional macho muscular guy there.....but not to the extent one finds it in deep South America. Shame cause it would save me lots of money not having to take the 9-10 hour overnight flights to the deep south. Costa Rica is so close to the US, it would be an easy trip.

 

Oh well, I'm off to Argentina and Uruguay next week to partake in the offerings there. Maybe I'll do a trip to CR later this year just to check things out. Anyway, thanks for the great information.......and welcome to the Latin American forum.

There is always a danger of bringing home guys from the street and you need to be careful. I found that the biggest problem was having your cellphone or wallet lifted so I never left the guys alone in the room with anything

 

of value...even to go to the bathroom. I would suggest you contact a gay friendly hotel that could arrange for a guide to show you all the ends and outs. I have never stayed at either but I know that The Colours hotel is all

 

gay and Casa 69 is very gay friendly and I think gay owned. There is a series of videos on You Tube by two gay guys living in Costa Rica that has lots of info (search Costa Rica gay and you should run across them). Some of

Thanks a lot for your help Brian. From what I hear Sauna Paris on 7th and 7th is a hidden gem but will also check out Hispalis and Puchos as well as take a look around Parque Nationale. When I was there last year I didn't feel unsafe although I took all the necessary precautions. When I was at La Avispa I met the sweetest young man from Nicaragua and so didn't require any escort service. Costa Rica has the reputation of being the safest country in Central America, but as you said, any big city can be dangerous.
