About a year ago at my annual physical my PSA level was 7, which is the median point and was scheduled for a biopsy of my prostate.

The doctor took 14 small snips in various places on my prostate and after worrying for a week thank God everything came back clear and cancer free. I was told that I would need to have my PSA level checked yearly (a simple blood test) to make sure my level does not move upwards and beyond my 7.

The problem is that it has been a year since my biopsy and I am still having trouble maintaining an erection when with others. By myself....no problem

Also, I used to be a big shooter and now not only does it take me ages but when I finally ejaculate it is anything but a big shooter...rather it is like a small spurt.

I asked my doctor and he said this was normal after a biopsy....but a year later??

Does anyone have any advice or similar experiences.

Mind you I am very, very grateful that no cancer was found after the biopsy but I am curious if things will ever get back to normal.

It is nice to use this site to be able to share whatever is bothering or concerning us...so any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to throw cold water on you. This subject was covered quite extensively some time back. Perhaps gloats who never lets anything die will research it for you. Back to the cold water. What is your latest PSA? Unfortunately, a biopsy is not conclusive except when it "finds" cancer. If your PSA goes up there will be another biopsy in your future.

Not an MD but generally having your prostate mangled a bit should not cause the symptoms you mention. Your "brain" could, easily.

I am not trying to preach gloom and doom. You are correct to be happy that you currently do not have a known cancer AND that treatment, to include watchful waiting, among others, is available. Only you and your doc can decide what is best.

Best regards,

KMEM

The PSA test is really a non-specific test that can show high numbers for reasons unrelated to prostate cancer. I've had a very high prostate test result for many years now, have been through two biopsies, an MRI, and special urinalysis tests, as well as the usual digital exams, and still not a sign of cancer has been found. (At this point I'm on quarterly psa tests, semi-annual physical prostate exams, and taking adovart to shrink the prostate - which lowered the psa result, but still far above your 7.)

The doctor told me to avoid ejaculating for a few weeks after each biopsy, but thereafter no problems. If your difficulty persists, you may want to consult the doctor about it, but as KMEM remarked, the brain can have as much to do about maintaining an erection as any physical causes.

All good advise above from other posters. A frank conversation with your Dr. is a good place to start. I am assuming he is a urologist and not an internist. If he is not a urologist, then by all means find one. You might also look to find a gay urologist, and since you indicate you are on the Jersey Shore, you might want to make a trip into NYC to find a gay urologist for further discussion of this matter. Typically a biopsy should not cause the symptoms you have described, but we are all different and our bodies react to invasions in different ways. You might try using some ED meds to help you along with your erections if you have not already done so. Also, any irritation of the prostate gland can affect the production of the ejaculate, and I am sorry to say, so does age! As we get older there is usually a reduction in ejaculate too.... ahh, yes, if only to be 20 again!!! Best wishes for a full recovery !!!

You really mean Avodart, not adovart.

Do a Google search. Type in - Avodart and hair restoration -

Although Avodart is intended for the treatment of an enlarged prostate, one side effect of taking Avodart for an extended period of time is the restoration of scalp hair.

Prolonged use of Avodart causes, in most patients, scalp hair to regrow even if the person has been bald or had thin hair for years before Avodart treatments began.

I have a long-time friend who was prescribed Avodart for his prostate issue. Over the years, his hair had become extremely thin and sparse. Within a couple of months of starting Avodart, his prostate problems vanished and within six months, his hair became as thick as it was when he was twenty-five years old.

He must continue to take Avodart to maintain the prostate health and to retain the hair that regrew. If he stops taking the medication, his prostate might act up again but, for sure, his hair will fall out again.

Only when it has to do with disgraced escorts and 'party of family values' Repiglicans. And you get uncomfortable when I bring up either...

Thanks imrthr . . . I googled Avodart and hair restoration as you suggested. While the hair restoration benefits sound great, the negative side effect includes impotence, reduced libido and reduced ejaculate volume. I think I'd rather go bald. lol . . . :)

That makes sense. There was an interesting article I read recently about Propecia (Finasteride).

Initially it was a prostate drug. The specialists noticed that one of the side effects was hair growth.

Researchers then developed this new drug and that's how Propecia was born.

May I assume that Propecia has the same negative side effects as Avodart?

Previous to my friend using Avodart, he used Propecia. It did nothing for him, hair wise.

He has not experienced any side effects from the Avodart (impotence, breasts etc) that some in the study experienced. We are all different. Some have side effects while others do not.

The main reason for my friend taking the Avodart was for his prostate. The medicine did its thing. The regrowth of his hair was an unexpected bonus.

Very true, imrhr! Possible side effects doesn't mean that it's going to happen in every case. The regrowth of hair is indeed a nice plus in the case of your friend! :)

Sorry my typo on Avodart...

I have noticed reduced ejaculation, but no hair thickening yet!!! It did reduce my psa score drastically. I've been taking it since last summer.

Good news on the PSA result. However, don't give up on the hair not growing back. I suspect you will soon be making an appointment with a hair stylist before too many months elapse.
