Just a reminder to all you dog fans out there. Next week is the biggest annual Dog Show in the country and maybe the world (only Crufts may rival it). Westminster Kennel Club takes over MSG next Monday and Tuesday. 2500 dogs will be showing on Monday or Tuesday with the whole thing on the USA Network family of channels (Monday 8-9 on USA, 9-11 on CNBC and Tuesday on USA).

I have been informed by a very reliable source (namely the person himself) that we will have at least one member at WKC with his dogs being entered. As a dog owner and lover, I've always wanted to get to WKC. My dogs qualified (they must have their Champions title prior to WKC) but were never serious threats so it wasn't really a good idea. However, just to brag, Wynn Sports and Book in Las Vegas has again published odds for each breed to win the title of Best in Show. I've told people this year that the breed competition for my breed, the Smooth Fox Terrier, will be a heavyweight bout between two great representatives of the breed. Both are multiple Best in Show winners and this is the biggest battle in this breed in many years. Wynn Sports and Book must think so too, because the Smooth Fox Terrier is listed as the top choice for what breed will win BIS at Westminster.

One memory though for WKC is that it spawned what may have been the greatest line ever uttered on live television a few years ago. It is a phrase dog show participants know well and think nothing of it, but to hear it live of national TV without the context for most people to understand it was hysterical. In the show ring, often times the dog that is chosen is seeming to ask to win -- performing just that little bit more than others. Well quite a few years ago, the winner in Best in Show was a bitch (I think it was Carly the English Springer Spaniel). They were interviewing the judge of the Best in Show competition and asked him why he chose that dog. And then he uttered the line that I'm sure had USA Network executives freaking out. Why did he choose her? "The bitch was asking for it".

So curl up with man's best friend and root for your favorite breed. It's always fun. And to the forum member entered, congratulations on getting there and good luck

I made it to Westminster a number of times, but my dogs made it only once. The problem with watching it on tv is that one sees only the group finals, but I prefer to see the judging in the breeds I care about. I did get to Crufts once, and enjoyed it more than Westminster, because the venue was more comfortable.
