I love thunder snow!

Maybe not as much as a sunny 85 degree day at the beach but

I think it may be my favorite violent weather phenomenon.

The lightning and thunder is making my snow shoveling exciting.

Hey Raul,

Is that a common weather phenomenon in the Chicago area....It happens here in Boston but only very rarely....Loving thunder and lightening storms in the summer, I bet I would enjoy them also.....

I understand that it is rare anywehre. I've had friends who grewup in snowy places that told me they hadn't even heard of it.

But besides serious storms and extrtropical cyclones I understand that it is more common in lake effect snow which of course we get in the coastal parts of Chicago.

I used to notice it more when I lived a couple blocks from the late and we would get all kinds of squalls.

I also think I notice it more because I'm often out in the snow trying to enjoy it and I do ride my bicycle yearround.

Cuz I hate being stuck inside even more than being cold. And lots of people don't notice the few thunder snows because the thunder is very very muted by the falling snow.

Well I've warmed upt a bit now and so am going out to do a little more shoveling and try to keep up. Man it is blowing like crazy outside,

well and even a bit inside, ha! Always amazes me how during a storm like this the snow will find every tiny crack in my old leaky house.

Raul,

Sounds cool! I'm enjoying the wild wind and blowing snow, but haven't experienced any lightning and thunder out in the burbs this evening. Must be happening in the city and closer to the lake.

I live in a fabulous condominium apartment overlooking most parts of a large city. From up here, thunder and lightening is like nothing I ever saw before. The freaky thing is that sometimes it seems like the lightening is headed right for my living room, with floor to ceiling windows. nonetheless, I just love it.

A good rip-snortin' thunderstorm is still one of mother nature's most spectacular entertainments.

A co-worker who was born and raised in SoCal had never been through one when he went to a conference in Chicago. Late one evening he called me from his hotel room in terror. "THERE'S THIS STORM! WHAT DO i DO?"

I told him to open the curtains and enjoy the show. ;)

I had never experienced thunder snow until 2005. I think that was the year. Major snowstorm here in Manhattan. I was stunned at the thought of thunder and lightning in a snow storm. It was cool. There was a brief repeat during the snowstorm a few weeks ago.

On a similar note, I've heard that there are hotels or cottages on the Oregon coast that specialize in thunderstorm tourist who book rooms to watch storms come in off the Pacific. That would be fun.

I was awoken by the sound of thunder during one of the numerous snow storms that have hit the area in recent weeks. Also, I am reminded about the time I had a room on an upper floor of a high-rise hotel when a violent thunderstorm hit the area at night. It was a corner room and the windows went from floor to ceiling... scary indeed... but in an exhilarating sort of way! Would the windows shatter? Would I be struck by lightening? Would I live to tell about it??!!

Ironically the next evening proved to be even scarier. A couple of "guests" in the next room had a violent argument and I swear one had a gun and was threatening to use it... That made me hit the floor faster than the lightening and thunder...

Nothing like mother nature to produce a spectacular show. Growing up on the plains, I often got to see spectacular displays of thunderstorms, horizontal lightening, thunder snow, tornados forming in the sky, sometimes coming down and sometimes just staying up in the air. Horizontal rain from the strong winds, 60 degrees below zero actual temperature without windchill added in, 100 plus degrees in the summer... I've had it all, and mostly enjoyed it all. I'm glad so many of my fellow posters are able to enjoy these spectacular events too. We live in an amazing world, even though we don't always appreciate it or take care of it as we should. Hope everyone in the affected storm areas this week are safe and sound.

Raul -- I'm amazed that you could stand the wind outside. Well before the real blizzard started, in the middle of the afternoon, the crazy wind was blowing lake effect snow/ice pellets into my face as I walked to a haircut appointment; I could barely stand upright.

I enjoyed the lakeside show vicariously last night by texting with friends with high rise apartments on the lake (one of them a mutual friend). One promised to try to get some video early this morning if the blizzard was still on.

Raul -- thundersnow really is spectacular. I've been through it a few times and it is something to see.

And today on weather channnel, their most experienced severe weather meterologist, Jim Cantore, was on camera and caught it. His reaction is positively priceless. He is stoked. He came awfully close to a few FCC fines.

Thanks for sharing... I had not seen this before, but it was fun to see his reaction. It can be very surprising if you are unaware that it can happen. As a forecaster, he should not have been that surprised.

Geez. I must be living under a rock. I've lived an entire lifetime and have never even heard of "Thunder Snow." It's amazing what one can learn on this forum. Thanks for sharing guys.

Unfortunately, I've never experienced thunder snow. The three years I spent in Wisconsin pretty much cured me of my liking for snow. Thank gosh I was in South Central Wisconsin and not more north or in Milwaukee to the east.

I have seen/heard some pretty spectacular thunderstorms at home in Texas over the years.

I once landed at MSP during a thunder snow storm. It was pretty spectacular. Lots of wind, lots of lightening and plenty of big snow flakes.

We get plenty of towering cumulonimbus to include thunderstorms and tornados in the South but I don't really remember a thunder snow storm here. As Jim Cantore might say, bad weather is where you find it. :)

Best regards,

KMEM
