Help from anyone?

I would like to save some pictures of artworks from on-line auction catalogs. The RIGHT CLICK "Save image as" does not work/ is disabled. I tried FILE / SAVE AS and included everything, but the image is not there when I open it up. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

A rather crude method I use is for with the web page showing the pic I want I hit "Prnt Scrn" which basically copies the whole web page. I then Ctrl C into a document like power point (I guess word or others could work). Then I use the edit in the Format tab in power point to crop the web page down to just the pic. You can enlarge the pic at that point and then right click to copy it as a jpg format or keep it in the document. Kind of a process but it works. I'll be interested to hear other ways to do it as well as I think the above is a bit labor intensive.

As others have said, screen capture MIGHT (or might not) be your best option. If you're using Windows7, the built-in "snipping tool" does a decent job.

But if the website is really determined to prevent it, there are ways to prevent even that.

Need more details. :-)

As Deej says, Windows 7 (And Vista, too, I think) have a Snipping Tool that let's you capture parts of a screen (e.g., capture just the part with the image).

There is also screen capture & editing software - I use Snag-It becuase I used it at work to capture & edit screen shots for training purposes, but i also remember there are some shareware (free) programs out there as well. (I tend to be wary of shareware, tho - any program can conflict with other programs, and I tend to be conservative about installing applicatons without reasonable support.)

Sometimes, when I want to save a lot of individual images from a web site or page, I go into my Temporary files folder, find them & copy them into another folder. This is a bit more complicated and the specifics depend on your operating system (WIndows, etc.) and security settings. But once you understand it, it can be a good way to save an entire set of photos at once.

I wouldn't want to use it for any "heavy lifting". For that, SnagIt (mentioned earlier) is the only utility I used in Windows 3.x that has managed to keep itself relevant and useful all these years. But for a quickie, you can't beat the Snipping Tool's price!

I use Safari for Mac, and there's a Windows version you can download here. (By the way, even though Apple asks for your email address on the download page, you don't have to provide it; the download will still work.)

I don't recall any problems with right-clicking and saving images in Safari. If you do run into a snag, there's an 'activity' window in Safari that lists all the elements on the web page. It's pretty easy to figure out which one is the image you want, double-click its URL to open it in its own window, and save it from there.

If you want to post a link to the page you're having trouble with, I can let you know if Safari can save the images or not. If it works, you can use Safari when you browse those troublesome pages.

If it doesn't work, there's always screen capture, as others have suggested, although you might not get the image's full resolution.

Good luck! :)

The "image" on that page is actually a Flash movie. Screen capture will be your best bet, unfortunately. People put stuff like that in Flash movies because it helps prevent image grabs.

Thank You, Deej

Deej, thanks very much for your help.

That works fine, is easy, and does not take a lot of time.

For others who might be interested in saving images from the web which do not allow a RIGHT CLICK and SAVE, here is an alternative method.

1. Open up your photo manipulation program; mine is Paint Shop Pro, so it is ready to go.

2. Go to the web page where your image shows. Click on PRT SCREEN key at top right of keyboard.

(You won't see or hear anything, but it makes a copy and puts it on your CLIPBOARD.)

3. Go to your image program, and click on EDIT at top left of screen (and the program finds the clipboard and the most recent image put on it) and then PASTE AS NEW IMAGE.

4. You now get a copy of the whole page in your program browser. Using your CROP tool, crop just the image you want and EDIT / COPY.

5. Then EDIT / PASTE AS NEW IMAGE and you have the image you wanted as a .jpg.

6. Then you can SAVE AS whatever you want in whichever file you want.

It's a little cumbersome, but once you do a few images, it becomes very easy and fast. And it solves all the problems and gives you the images you desire.

Thanks for all your help, deej.

I had to use Safari's 'activity' window as described above to find the image's URL. Not especially straightforward as Sotheby's uses a somewhat arcane naming system for their files. The one whose name ends in 'vid=1600' seems to be the one you want.

Still, here are the images. They opened in their own window, and a right-click was all it took to save them.

As Deej says, they don't make it easy. But they didn't reckon on Safari! (Or yours truly.)

If you're a Mac user, you just Apple+Shift+4 and your pointer turns into a crosshatch that you can then click & drag around the part of your screen you want to capture as a picture.

This is one area where Apple has, historically, be light years ahead of all others. Screen capture and image manipulation have been excellent and built-in from the ground up. Even iOS on the iPhone and iPad have had screen capture from the beginning. Windows Phone 7 still doesn't have the feature, and MS has said they're not sure when/if they'll add it at all because they don't think anyone wants it (even as journalists who actually write about the product are clamoring or it).

Right you are! I use it all the time for everything. If I cannot right-click->Copy Image, it's Apple+Shift+4, then click and drag. I also use the iPhone's Home+Power buttons to take screen images on the iPhone.

Apple was/is the original graphics computing platform.
