To compile their first annual list of the drunkest cities in America, the editors of thedailybeast.com studied three variables: 1) average alcohol consumption over a month, 2) the highest levels of binge drinking, and 3) the places where large portions of the population suffer the dire health consequences from over-drinking.

Are you surprised by any of the cities on (or not on) this list?...

Why is Austin on the list and not San Antonio...where the drunk driving problem is clearly out of control? I'm surprised Miami isn't on the list either, but as expensive as their drinks are I'm sure majority of the population is on drugs instead. $4 for a glass of plain tonic water in between drinks?

Jack. There is one big surprise to me: I am really shocked that Washington DC isn't on there because there are some really serious drinkers up there. I guess Mocha is right too about Miami. Other than that, not too shocked.

I agree--where's DC? At least half of Congress and 90 percent of their lobbyists should be in rehab!

Mocha, San Antonio is #19.

I'm surprised that San Francisco, San Diego, and Sacramento all made the list but NOT Los Angeles. Well at least we now what our worthless state legislature spends its time doing!!!!!

Curiously, a disproportionate number of cities in colder climates (Milwaukee, Fargo, Anchorage, Burlington, Omaha, Sioux City, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Hartford, Buffalo, Chicago, etc...) appear on this "Drunkest" list.

So does that study prove that have to be drunk to live in Milwaukee? LOL

I am not surprised that the colder climate cities are on the list. The first time I landed in Greenland, I was met by a very drunk Danish official who could barely ride the bicycle he was on. He scolded me for being late on my flight plan and had obviously started to celebrate my arrival before I got there. :) If you check, you will see that Iceland and all of the Scandinavian countries have a drinking problem. The long nights leave very little else to do. After sex, what is more long lasting? Drinking. :) Ditto Russia and all the other cold climate countries/cities. I am sure you understand what I am saying and, if not, check it out. :)

Milwaukee #1 Hooray, I guess not.

Well I always new Milwaukee would be #1 someday, alcohol no surprise to me. My 56 years here, it is the Brew Capitol. Kids grow up watching the fathers drinking cases of beer a week. The breweries use to be the 3rd highest employer in the city. You were allowed to take home 10 cases of beer a month. My uncle worked for Miller, before Miller Lite, yes the High Life. I grew up with Miller High Life in our garage, then they bought Special Export and more beer in the house. Football still rules in the state and with football and tailgating comes drinking. I believe Wisconsin is in the top 3 in Brandy drinking. Why do you think Wisconsin has one of the largest convicted OWI population. Beer is part of growing up in Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Tavern league in Wisconsin use to be one of the most powerful lobbiest in the state. Wisconsin was one of the last states to move the drinking age to 21. Drinking is a part of our culture and has been for over 150 years. The State symbol should be the Boilermaker and not the train engineers of Purdue either. Nothing like a shot with your beer.

One the trends is for young adults turning 21 to have 21 shots. That has led to more than couple of alcohol poisining cases a few have resulted in death. For most it is the drug of choice. I am appalled at the number of parents who have quarter barrel parties for the their kids when they turn 18. If you are under 21 you can have a drink with your parents present, no questions asked.

Another fact, Milwaukee's homicide rate increased. The number one reason, domestic violence. What fuels this, alcohol.

Am I disgusted? I am. I grew up in a household and extended family that alcohol was a part of life. My dad had 3 double Manhattans every night. My mom would go through a bottle of CC weekly. Family gatherings have had alcohol at their core all my life. I do admit I have a beer about once every 2-3 weeks, usually when grilling. The most I have had in one day in the last 10 years maybe 2 beers. Never booze and almost always lite beer. I never have any alcohol when I am out, just water, sometimes I splurge and have an ice tea.

I am sure Milwaukee is proud to be #1.

No, but it helps. ;)

What you DO have to do in Milwaukee is drink Miller products. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES walk into a bar in Milwaukee and order a Budweiser. Trust me on this. LOL

to not include new orleans in the top ten is to totally discredit the survey! Are you serious? People come here to drink. I mean that is the destination attraction of my drunken adopted hometown. Also, Ft. liquordale Florida should have been # 2. I am the only SOBER person I know in new orleans and that is because I have to DRIVE everywhere at all hours and as a top the worst thing you can have is, "WHISKEY DICK!" Happy New Year to all. http://www.rentboy.com/mikey9nola1
