I have reservations to spend New Year's eve in South Beach. Wondering what to expect. Anyone been there for it?

Eight or nine years ago I spent a New Years Eve in SOBE. I was living in North Miami Beach and usually spent the occasion in Ft Lauderdale but thought I would give SOBE a try. Had dinner on Ocean Blvd on the terraced steps of that large white Art Deco hotel (can't recall the name, something like The Tides) around 13th or 14th. Good food and expensive. Then went over to the Palace and hung around there for awhile. Then I went to a night club which I don't think is there any longer or has changed owners and name. It was on the west side of SOBE and had pretty good dance music. Didn't meet anyone that I would take home but had a nice mellow evening. I think Ft Lauderdale has a better gay scene for such occasions.

As a long time South Florida resident I will tell you that South Beach has changed a lot over the years. Used to be a very progressive, gay-friendly, party town town. Not so much any more. Most of the once very popular gay dance clubs and bars are no longer there, and the law enforcement folks over there definitely aren't as gay-friendly as they used to be. It has gotten pretty expensive there, and many of the gay people who used to live there moved out. The SoBe crowd is now also more hetero and more hip-hop than it used to be. SoBe still has a gay scene, but nothing like it was during the 90s and early 2000s. I would agree that Fort Lauderdale is a better bet.

I would love to but I will be out of the States.

Any ideas of a group of us meeting for New Year's Eve, either there or in FLL? Or elsewhere? It might be fun ... What do you guys think?
