Like you need another reason to hate people having more sex than you.

New research shows semen may act as an antidepressant and could be addictive to women accustomed to making whoopee au naturel.

It sounds like urban locker-room legend but it's actually a scientific suggestion from psychologist Gordon Gallup, based on his recent study of 293 females at the State University of New York in Albany.

Hardly conclusive but definitely creative, Gallup's controversial findings were published in New Scientist magazine earlier this year. His research team found women whose partners never used condoms were the least depressed, followed by those who occasionally used them and those who always used them.

Rounding out the bottom, the most depressed women were those having no sex at all. ed can't confirm it, but the latter fact may be published in the No Duh Scientific Journal later this year.

"They're giving lots of ammo to the more juvenile men's magazines," says David Stovny, Askmen.com sex columnist. "They can say if your girlfriend doesn't want to do certain things, just tell her it's good for her -- it says so right here in this study."

Stovny wasn't surprised by the study and laughed at the suggestion Gallup has confirmed everything high school boys have been telling their girlfriends for generations.

"In this day and age, most people probably use protection, and if they don't, chances are, they're in a relationship," he says. He points out when women are in a relationship, they tend to be happier as a result of the companionship, not necessarily because of the unprotected sex.

In short, he isn't swallowing the semen theory.

University of Alberta Psychiatrist Dr. Pierre Chue, who has researched this area, has a few questions of his own about the unusual study.

"Certainly you could argue there are potentially mood-altering qualities from the prostaglandins in semen when absorbed in the female genital tract," he says. "But the problem with this study is that there were associated changes in behaviour."

He says the quality and length of the relationship, external activities and change in lifestyle could all impact the results.

Although women won't soon be throwing out their Prozac in favour of a shag, it may not be too far-fetched to imagine a drug mimicking semen's qualities in the future. Chue points out that in ancient China, semen was used as an oral treatment for stomach ulcers -- but adds that would be a tough sell these days.

And as for the post-coital buzz being somehow related to a dollop of semen, Chue doubts it.

"That probably depends on the quality of sex more than anything else," he says, laughing.

Reliable or not, the semen-as-antidepressant report should not be taken as a scientific green light to have unprotected sex. Gallup emphasizes the consequences of sex without condoms far outweigh the benefits of potentially semen-induced euphoria.

And for the record, ed totally supports either abstaining or having protected sex. So please save the nasty letters about promoting promiscuity for KISS's Gene Simmons.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

The makeup of seminal plasma varies from guy to guy, but it generally contains some 30 substances (many in minute quantities). Believe it or not, they include:

- Calcium (mineral)

- Chloride (oxidizing agent)

- Cholesterol (steroid alcohol present in body fluids)

- Creatine (nitrogenous substance found in muscle)

- Fructose (sugar used for energy)

- Sorbitol (body alcohol)

- Urea (from urine)

- Vitamin B12 (for proper function of nervous system and metabolism)

- Zinc (mineral)
