You guys remember "Pat" from SNL? I guess we've all run across these people that we can't seem to figure out if they're guys or gals. But I've never really known such a person myself. Do these people try to make it difficult for us to figure them out on purpose? Do they get off on it? Or do they get offended when people guess wrong? I wish I knew one well enough to ask him (or is it her??).

Yes/No/Maybe; The term your looking for is: Androgyny. One of the "Bones" episodes featured such a person: 'Bones' versus the Japanese subcultures.

Here is "Pat" out of character:

Yes I have a rather large lesbian friend name Pauline but we call her paulie and She is pat to a T

Yes for her it is now deliberate but it didn't start thatway she was a tomboy who hated when people could not tell. Now that she is comfortable in her skin oh and a high ranking police officer she loves to Ham it up.

I went to high school with someone named Chris. We were never sure whether Chris was a boy or a girl. No one ever seemed to have gyn class with this person, so we could not even find out that way. I don't know anyone who stayed in touch with that person, so I never found out whether Chris was a boy or girl.

I also have a rather large lesbian friend named Melanie who goes by Mel. She delights in people calling her sir or not being able to figure out of she's a sir or ma'am.

What difference does it make? Would any of you treat that person differently depending on his or her gender?

Well, knowing whether to say "Sir" or "Ma'am" would be one difference. But I was mainly curious if these people do it on purpose in order to fuck with people, and from the responses I'm seeing, I think the answer seems to be yes.
