Anyone here seen the movie Beefcake?

I just watched it last night, and I recommend it to anyone who likes those old black-and-white Athletic Model Guild (AMG) photos.

The movie is a docudrama about Bob Mizer and his AMG studio, and is loaded with pictures of young fit guys from the 50's and 60's.

The director did an excellent job of mixing archival AMG photos and films, scripted performances, and interviews with surviving models and photographers from the period.

The DVD includes a director's commentary, as well as five AMG "featurettes", including one featuring a naked, oiled, 19-year old Joe Dallesandro posing and flexing for the camera. :9

It is a great movie. Fascinating to see a little slice of queer history normally not available. Wolfevideo.com distributes some excellent movies, I'm glad my local independent video store carries them.

Physique Pictorial

It is an excellent documentary and there are some great images. I got a collection of Mr. Mizer's slides at the bookstore in the Village which specializes in that type of material, some of which were original slides and not dupes. They make a wonderful background display at parties. Expensive, but well worth what I paid in 1989.

There is a greatly amusing porn film with Zak Spears and Blue Blake, circa about 1995, which was I believe directed by Chi Chi Larue. If anyone is interested, I will obtain the details. It is essentially about the physique magazines, with photo shoots coming to life as porn, some good, some bad. If I recall correctly, the studio was Catalina.

For those who are interested, the European publishing house Taschen reproduced (not the very best quality), a bound three volume selection of reprints of Physique Pictorial from 1951 - 1990. Taschen books are often available at both gay and non-gay bookstores and can be ordered from A Different Light and most likely found on Amazon.

everyone wants sex but no one wants to pay for it.
