Nothing personal of course. :D

Given stratospheric NYC rents, if I ever move back, I'll live in NJ too.

Ah. Would not have thought that, but Jersey City or even Hoboken are close enough to Manhattan to amount to living there, especially as compared to commuting from the parts of Brooklyn not by the bridge.

Also no city income tax...

I thought near-to NYC towns in NJ were still subject to that double taxation thing. How far does the NYC overlay tax extend into NJ?

I'm not sure but I think the "commuter" tax got repealed. So I'm not sure you pay the city income tax if you live in NJ (even if you work in NYC).

If you don't work in NYC, NYC tax irrelevant.

Sorry, @Zman, the NYC commuter tax lives.

Point of applying it to non-residents who work in the city is that they use city services and it's unfair to apply it to city residents only. Plus it would be a huge revenue loss.

Every state taxes non-residents on income earned in the state. Believe that is the case w/all cities with income tax too. It's a basic principle of tax law/policy.

Bad enough you have to live in NJ...but to pay NYC taxes too

No, he doesn't have to. *sighs* I even said so.

You told him it didn't matter because the commuter tax had been repealed. It hasn't, but it's still irrelevant.
