If you are going from Southhampton to NYC why not take the LIRR? Granted traffic on the LIE can be a bear in the summer so perhaps a luxury liner would be a better choice

As for smooth sailing goes, our voyage was somewhat rough midway and the weather wasn't too cooperative. Be prepared for some clouds and rain. I think the folks from Cruise Talk http://www.travelserver.net/travelpage/ubb-bin/ultimatebb.cgi can answer your question.
