Hi Guys;

As I sit here in Palm Springs this morning (with my wheels spinning), I'm curious to hear from my fellow "working boys" as well as past & potential clients about what I think my next step is....

In the past few months (due to the ever erratic economy), like most of us, I've been doing a LOT of traveling to stay afloat (in my case being upside down in a mortgage in Las Vegas.....I KNOW...lol...you're SHOCKED to hear that!).....What I'm finding is that my desire to "go home" to Vegas is diminishing GREATLY. (The las time I felt like this was when I left New York for Las Vegas six years ago).

At the last Hooville Weekend, I was fortunate to have some good talks with Andrew D, David SF, & Cristian....I'm hoping to hear your input as well boys!.

I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about moving to Palm Springs & running ads in Vegas & LA as well (for advance bookings only)..Based on the distance between Palm Springs & the other two cities, does this sound do-able to you guys?

Well....back to my list of "Pros & Cons" (Vegas vs.Palm Springs)....Any input would be appreciated!

There's a few recent threads on here about supposed clients flaking. You may want to think how much that may upset you if you've crossed state lines to get to the appointment.

Hi Kevin;

Thanks for the post....I read all the threads while I was in NYC...(as well as had my share while there).

(That's when I seriously started thinking about this move).

Definitely another variable to consider..(Hopefully one that will be a NON issue!).

L.A. to Palm Springs is 279 miles...about the same distance as where I live now from Dallas (where I used to live).

I say its doable. I mean, 4 hours and 30 bucks of gas is not much considering how much one can make in a different city. And if you have a dependable car, there should be no excuse not to go say 2-3 times a month.

Personally, I wouldn't let someone get an oppurtunity to flake because I would only take on the spot appointments. But then again, I'm the type that when I want to get out of town, I just pack up and go LOL. Unless its a regular, there's no reason to limit oneself to a potential prospect.

The last 2 times I traveled within the state last month, I went without any knowledge of a prospect. I didnt regret my doing so at all. You just never know who's gonna be in town when you show up. And not many clients are keen on taking appointments in advance from someone coming in from out of town. They are just as concerned about flakes too, if not more.

You may want to consider asking for deposits if you are not certain, but not everyone is willing to do so for a 1st meet. I've been asked how could I drive to a city; sight-unseen without a deposit, yet ask for one for a client who has made a booking. My answer is if something comes up on the road, or I cancel other appointments for 1 client and something happens on their end (God forbid), atleast it wont be a complete waste of trip. Whereas if I just hop up and go to a city, there's no promise that I wont be booked by someone else at the same time they want to meet.

So yeah, just do it...But it would seem to me there should be enough to do in LA, no?

Actually L.A. to Palm Springs is only about 100 miles, with a little less than a 2-hour drive (if traffic is flowing!) However, Palm Springs to Las Vegas is nearly the 279 miles you mention...

Hi Joey;

Thanks for the post! I appreciate the input....

(Really comes down to getting OUT of my comfort zone & starting over somewhere else...I've done VERY well in Vegas, just think it may be time to move on & just "visit" now & again).

I guess that's the beauty of being a "working boy"...can work anywhere!

Ace,

Your plan sounds both viable and prudent, imho. Why not increase your marketability by basing yourself in a city like P.S. where you can easily travel (drive) to other major markets? If you move to P.S., you could also occasionally run your ad in San Diego, right? Good luck.

Hey Jack;

Thanks for the post....

EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing....glad for the positive reinforcement.

(Hadn't thought of posting in San Diego, though.....so thanks for that!).

Wonder if Rentboy offers a discount for multiple ads? Will look into it.

I would talk to some escorts who already live full time in Palm Springs and see how their business is. Would be a shame to move there and find there is very little local business and you would have to travel a lot to make ends meet. I know one guy who lived there and spent a fortune on air conditioning.

re: It's worth a shot in about 3 months

I did something similar for about six months floating between Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio and it worked out great. However I think your timing is off for Palm Springs, it is not really that good in the summer as its off season and way too hot. I would wait till September when activity starts picking back up there. Just my two cents.

There seem to be very few escorts who actually live in Palm Springs. My guess is that is because: 1) the locals don't hire very much; 2) those who do, often prefer to go into LA to hire, because there is more choice there; 3) there is a lot of competition from visiting escorts; and 4) there aren't many visiting clients between June and September. You probably noticed at the Hooville Weekend that everyone who was accompanied by an escort had brought him from elsewhere rather than hire a local. There aren't many high-rollers among the gay residents of PS: most are retirees, often on somewhat limited incomes, so they tend to be one hour guys, if they hire at all. The only local escorts whom I know personally spend a major part of their time traveling around the country, not just making quickie trips to LA, SD or LV for appointments. If you lived here, you would have to advertise in those cities if you wanted clients there, since they are not likely to look at PS to find an escort, and the hassle and expense of traveling there wouldn't be worth it for short appointments. The main advantage to living in PS is that it is cheaper than living in LA or SD.

Hey Guys;

Appreciate ALL the posts & well informed suggestions as well!

A BIG undertaking no doubt, with lots to consider....not in a big hurry, but it's on the back burner.

Well, this kinda spoiled my idea of going to Palm Springs this summer. My friend just got back and said it seemed like gay paradise there. But compared to where we are...:rolleyes:

As much as I love to travel about though...I would still have to live in a place where I could do good. I wouldn't be happy living in a home base where I couldn't because it'd mean I'm obligated to travel. Sometimes I make more money just staying home, other times traveling is the only sensible thing to do.

Then again, it all boils down to when and where. I know Miami is considered slow season around this time of year also...but I started out there around this time and it seemed very alive and well to me. Guess you just have to find out for yourself.

I think that was kinda mean to refer to his trips as 'just quickie' trips, don't you think? There's nothing minuscule about making quickie trips.

Even if the locals aren't hiring, who's to say there won't be someone happening to fly in? Which I'm sure happens often in L.A. as in most cities with an international airport. Not everyone has the ability to travel around the country, and if going (only) an extra 200+ miles paid the rent for the month, what difference would it make?

All the times I have been in Palm Springs it is a beautiful city with excellent accommodations and friendly people. It is about a two hour drive, but remember... you got the OC right by you too. We may not be LA... but heck we are travel destination and have some of the nicer beaches.

You are an established presence in Las Vegas. Why give that up altogether? It might make more sense to plan a regular weekend or week once a month in PS, advertise it in advance, and have some sense before you go what you can make out of it. Try it for a reasonable period of time to see if it works. Something like, "I'm in PS the first (second, third, fourth) weekend every month. Let's get together!" People can plan that way.

The larger question about staying or leaving Las Vegas is, How long do you you want to continue escorting? What is your next step? Is your non-escort future in LV or is it somewhere else? Can you somehow get out from under your current disadvantageous mortgage? If your non-escort future lies in Las Vegas, it might make sense to refinance and hold on there. If somewhere else, you might consider starting to establish an escort client base in that location and use that as transition.

Of course living in Las Vegas and being one of Ace's clients I wouldn't want to lose him to LA or SD or even PS BUT I support his decision to follow his heart or dick which ever the case may be! All will be as it should be and Ace will be successful where ever he settles (again). You GO Boy!
