Wonder if any of you know much about taking a train from San Francisco to Montreal? Any suggestions, tips, ideas about such a trip?

Also, does anybody know how long the trip might take?

Depends on how long you want to spend, and if you want to take the train in both directions. You'll need to check the schedules to be sure you're going through the most scenic stretches (through the mountains) in daylight. However, to avoid duplication, you could take Amtrak from San Francisco to Chicago. You'd have to check Amtrak's website for routes, but I think you may still be able to get directly from Chicago to Toronto and/or Montreal by train. If not, you'd have to go on from Chicago to NY by train, then take the train from NY to Montreal.

You could return from Montreal all across Canada to Vancouver on Canada's Via Rail and then come back down the coast to San Francisco on Amtrak.

Of course, you could do this in reverse. Or just one way. Lots of options, as you can see. Straight through it would take three to four days, via the U.S. Maybe another day via Canada. Just check the websites for schedules. Have fun!

goto http://www.via.ca and pick up a north american railpass. Take Amtrack to Vancouver, and then take the VIA from Vancouver to Toronto using the Blue and Silver service. THis is a renonwned train trip through the Canadian Rockies, and the serice includes a private room, exclusive veiwing car, and all food. Then take the regular VIA service from Toronto to Montreal. If you use a railpass, youll need to pay and addtional fee to use blue and silver, but its reasonable and worth it. then you can either continue back on train using your railpass for the amount of time that you bought it for, or just fly back.
