While La Cage is getting good reviews, partly for the book by Harvey Fierstein, the man himself is getting a good review for his role as Tevye at

the National Theater's production of Fiddler on the Roof.

The Washington post says of him: "He is an enterprise unto himself, a show-biz whiz who somehow channels his raspy honk of a voice -- a broken-sounding instrument if ever there was one -- and bear-size presence into a figure the audience adores."

A friend saw pieces while it was in pre-production and said that while the voice is not Mostel. What fierstein does for the comedic lines as tevye is just phenomenal. Apparently you cannot help but love him. Plus Im told the guy playing Perchik is an absolute drop dead hunk

And it would also appear that he's fiddling on more than the roof while in town too. :D

As wonderful as Zero Mostel was in "Fiddler in the Roof, " he loved to ad lib, which threw the cast (and the audience) on occasion. The night I saw the musical, he could not remember the names of his various daughters. Since Mostel had been played the lead role for a while, it was clear that he was looking for new laughs and not just with the names. And it was funny, but not as funny as Zero seemed to believe. If Fierstein is sticking to the script, I am not sure that people will care that he doesn't have Mostel's singing voice. Actually, you could not go wrong with either man in such a good show.
