We are diminished by the passing of the beautiful treasure who was Dixie Carter, a gifted actress and extraordinary singer. Thank you, Dixie, for the many memories. Thanks for making us laugh....and cry. Peace be with you and your family.

Dixie Carter was a true class act and the epitome of a strong, determined, charming Southern lady. She championed so many important causes and was a strong supporter of gay equality. I watched Designing Women during my college years and her character, Julia Sugerbaker, resonated with me because she always stood up for what she believed in. Rest in Peace Dixie. You will be greatly missed.

A real shock. She was only 70 while Hal Holbrook is 85. I expected him to go first by a long way. A true lady and talented actress from rural Tennessee.

RIP.

She had a fine singing voice. She did a lot of piano bar and cabaret entertaining. This clip from Designing Women shows some of her range and is song in the character who has lost confidence in her ability to hit the high note in How Great Thou Art I don't think the other actors needed to work very hard to get the look of love and awe in their eyes, particularly Mr. Holbrook, her reallife husband and TV show companion.

This is one my favorite Julia Sugarbaker bits, from the show when they were designing a funeral for a man dying of AIDS. The video quality is terrible but it is worth a watch. She's got a couple of great zingers toward the end.

I was at a hotel in dowtown Houston, making my way down to the bar for a night cap. Busily looking at email, I didn't see the person who got on the elevator with me. We arrived at the second floor lounge, I went politely after the women still aborbed in my phone. I ordered a scotch, neat, still obsessing with my email, when the lady also at the bar leaned over and playfully asked me what could possibly be so important to distract me from not appreciating a good drink. I was embarassed and mumbled some response, and put my phone away. Dixie Carter, also drinking scotch, offered me a toast which I regret to not remember. What I do remember is how personable, charming, and beautiful she was, and what a gracious presence she had. We talked for all of maybe 5 minutes. She was a rare woman of class and our chance encounter a fond blessed memory for me. May she rest in peace.

Cause of Death Revealed...

Dixie's publicist has revealed that she passed away from complications arising from endometrial cancer--apparently a common type of uterine cancer. She was receiving endometrial cancer chemotherapy, but in the end the treatment couldn’t keep her safe from harm. She was Beautiful, Sweet, Sexy, Sassy and a Proud Southerner to her core. I adored her. There will never be another Dixie Carter. A sad day, indeed.

A really great lady and the interesting story about her singing on the show was that she asked the producers that she be allowed to sing every time they asked her to go off on some left wing tangent she didn't agree with which is why she got to sing on the show so often! So nice to see someone willing to play -- and play it brilliantly -- a character so different than themselves!

So sad that Dixie Carter has passed away. She was one of my favorites. I'm sure "Ms. Sugerbaker" is decorating heaven right now! She'll be missed and fondly remembered.

In all our discussion on class in another thread I couldn't let the opportunity go by to note post here. By far the world has lost one of its venerable class acts in the loss of Ms. Carter. RIP and may heaven be blessed by what we have lost.

Thanks for bringing this up. MS. Carter was a (gasp) conservative Republican but I doubt that she had a mean bone in her body, not that other R's do, as a rule.

Regardless, her show was an icon and she, as a human being, and actress will be missed by many.

I was unaware that she was a conservative Rupublican. I'm curious what her personal feelings were on subjects like gay rights and gay marriage.

And So you will know and your children know . . .

I Love that scene - that is the quintessential Julia Sugarbaker moment

Just as the episode where Suzanne is supposed to surrender her Miss Georgia World Crown to "Miss Valdosta Feed and Grain" is the perfect Suzanne moment.

Such smart, sharp writing and wonderful performances.

Now we get reality shows like - "The Real Housewives of Trailer Trash City" and

"Amatuer Vagabond Proctologist" - You've been voted out of the stirrups!

And let us not forget her wonderful voice - I saw her years ago at the Rainbow Room in NYC - A night I will not soon forget!

here is one of my favorite "Julia moments" from Designing women...

She was very supportive of gay rights. She was a Republican (but was convinced to vote for Bill Clinton after she met him) but I would never call her a "conservative Republican." That's simply inaccurate. I met her many times when she was working in New York on the stage and she had very moderate Republican views.

Yeah seems first Bea now her. All the actresses I saw as a kid are going.

I remember here from some of the re-runs of Different Strokes myself....

I always remembered her Southern Accent....lol

Not to stir things up too much about a recently departed, we agree that she was a Republican. Whether she was a conservative Republican might be a matter of interpretation but I think she was conservative in general. A lot of Republicans made the mistake of voting for Bill Clinton. However, if you knew her personally, I will defer to your opinion.
