I agree "Greatness." One has to have a little compassion for the guy despite his blatant hypocrisy. That’s a pretty serious internal conflict when your ideology doesn’t align with your own identity. If he is gay or bi then his public persona (and voting record) clearly seem to be a reaction to his own struggles. Not to mention an apparent issue with drinking and driving.

Again, can’t defend his hypocrisy but also can’t wish ill on a man who so clearly has some major personal issues to work on. He’s still a human.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with both you and Greatness on this one. I lived in the closet for many years, had the wife and children, even voted for some Republican candidates from time to time. Yet, I NEVER opposed gay rights much less took any action to deny them. Should we be compassionte to this prick? Sure, as soon as the asshole apologizes for his years of anti-gay activity and comes out for gay rights. Then I'll be happy to get out my hankie. Until then, I hope he reaps the ill will that he has sown.

Im afraid I have to agree. Ive been a closet man and a member of the republican party but I know my values and what it means to have equal rights for all. I can forgive and be compassionate but not while he stands in the way of the rights I seek just to benefit his own wallet or ease his life while he talks out of both sides of his face. Married with kids and I was writing amicus curae briefs in support of gay marriage. Not a politically correct thing to do in my carreer but the right (or left) thing

"...last summer he discussed his sexual orientation and how that squares with his voting record with Californian columnist Lois Henry. Ashburn wouldn’t say whether he is gay but did say he didn’t consider himself an anti-gay activist. He agreed he’d voted conservatively on gay issues, but said that’s what his conservative constituents would want him to do." http://www.bakersfield.com/news/local/x379809007/Report-ignites-debate-over-Ashburns-orientation-gay-rights-voting-record

Fuck that

People like him are deeply troubled and scarred. Maybe he needs more love and support to change his attitude.

Maybe he needs to Come Out - and APOLOGIZE for all the pain he has caused to

law abiding, taxpaying GAY AMERICANS - who are tired of being treated as Second Class

Citizens and Being USED as Political FODOR to stir the hatred of the Ignorant to vote

Against their own interests on important issues like education/healthcare/pensions/

benefits/etc. by appealing to scared, uninformed, ignornant peoples basest insticts.

Hatred is the Lowest Common Denominator and the Right Wing uses it against progress.

and humanity every day.

What about unconditional love

I am not saying what he has done is right. I always believe true unconditional love will win and will be able to change him for the better. I've met many unfortunate gay people in my life. Some people are extremely vulnerable and insecure. What I'm suggesting is to show some love to this guy.

You sound like a BAD "BILLY JACK" Movie ( as if there was a good one)

There was allegeldly this guy who believed the same thing - He got nailed to a cross died and maybe came back for chocolate eggs and marshmallow peeps.

Jews believe that the Mesiaah will come - WHEN EVERYONE Keeps the Sabbath - 7 Billion People - Mostly Xtians/Muslims/Buddists/Etc - Lets get the Vegas Odds!

The only way that minorities have won thier rights throughout history is by protest, pressure, persusaion, violence or threat thereof, education, shame and the raising of political conscscience and the organization and excercise of politcal power.

So when you coddle this creep you empower the enemies of equality.

Get off your ass - Stop worrying about the poor Closet Criminals and:

Get A Sign - Write a 100 letters - Showup at your State Rep/Senators

Office/Congressional Office and DEMAND YOUR EQUALITY!!!!

In Goverment terms 1 Letter (Not an Email - But a Real Paper Letter 1 =-300 VOtes)

I haved done this for a living and this is how they think. 300 Votes is an election

Billy Don't Hug a Hetro - Stand Up and Be, GAY DEMAND RIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not so much that he's sucking cock; it's not so much he's a Republican; it's not even so much that he drives drunk. What boils my blood is the vehement attack against same sex marriage. For this kind of atrocity, he deserves as much disgrace as can be heaped his way. These are the real "evil-doers" and they must be exposed and ridiculed for the hypocrites they are.

How about that he drives drunk and is on the Transportation and Housing Standing Committee (JURISDICTION: Bills relating to the operation, safety, equipment, transfer of ownership, licensing and registration of vehicles, aircraft and vessels. ...)

Senator ASSburn!

Self-loathing is endemic among homophobes. When elected, their fears are magnified--especially when they are desperate to conceal their own identities: Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Bob Baumann, Terry Dolan, Roy Cohn, Ted Haggard, Bob Allen, Ken Mehlman, Glenn Murphy--the list is endless, and almost all campaigned as "conservative" candidates.

That a human being wastes a lifetime lying about his own identity is bad enough. That he attempts to cover his tracks by lying loudly, and at the expense of his fellow gay citizens, is unacceptable. People like him (and the homophobic legislation they endorse) instigate anti-gay violence against innocent young people across this country.

Senator Roy Ashburn can best apologize by simply telling the truth. At that moment, he will have stopped campaigning and voting against himself. That will be a good day for California and our entire country.

Ironic...

The ultimate irony in this affair is not the closeted gay/bisexual married father of 4 daughters picking up an openly gay Latino at a gay nightclub while drunk driving a state-owned car. It's not that's he's promulgating laws that may discriminate against himself and other gay men.

No, the ultimate irony here is that he's doing all this while 'representing his constituents and voting as they want.'

Could it be that this supremely conflicted man is the FIRST HONEST POLITICIAN? He does things to his own detriment because that's what his constituency wants!

Unfortunately I think he was very happy to lie to hid constituancy. I would rather think as you do but unavoidably assume he acted to get elected not do the will of his people.

Why not show some unconditional love for those whose lives suffer because of the acts of hypocrites like this man? One way to do that would be to do as the wet and wild bear suggests: get out there and work for gay rights. Let the conservative Christians cuddle this guy- we need to take care of our own.

This pollyanna type of response advances us not at all. He dug his grave, let him lie in it. You don't seriously think he gives a shit what we think anyway, do you?

Perhaps when he realizes that those very same Christians no longer want him, he will reflect on what he has done, and then come with hat in hand asking for our forgiveness. When that happens, I can then think of a warmer response. Until then...

NONSENSE. It is not hypocrisy to be gay and yet oppose the gay agenda. If items in the gay agenda are socially or economically undesireable it is not inconsistent for a gay person to oppose them. If so, would it not be hypocritical for a white person to oppose rights and privileges for blacks and others? Would it not be hypocritical for a rich person to favor laws helping the poor? An employer to favor laws benefical to workers? Would it be hypocritical for a pedophile to oppose laws prohibiting child abuse, ors is he somehow obligated to favor whatever his "group" wants. NO, I am not saying being gay is like pedophilia, so don't screetch at me. The point is that it is not hypocritical to favor legal and social positions which you believe to be best for society, even though they may not be considered beneficial to your own identity group.

If he chose to be gay and chose to oppose the gay agenda, you would be closer to showing hypocrisy. But we can assume he did not choose to be gay.
