Not sure of the degree that this story is playing out in the US, but it's received fairly wide-spread coverage here, what with the high-profile hockey connection.

A beautiful story, in spite of the grief, and I highly recommend both the EPSN article and the TSN video.

A sad ending to a courageous and honourable life. But I suspect his good nature will continue to fuel additional good works through others.

Brendan Burke Dies In Car Accident

Brendan Burke, the openly gay son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, died in a car accident in Indiana on Friday afternoon at the age of 21. The Burkes made international news in December when the story of Brendan's coming out to his very supportive father was the subject of a profile on ESPN.com. The crash, said to be snow-related, also took the life of Brendan's 18 year-old companion.

Horrible, horrible.

The profile from ESPN (by John Buccigross) is long, but quite a beautiful piece.

Finally a video from Canada's TSN follows here:

May our own hurting hearts find comfort in his example, and may those that knew and loved Brandon find peace.

He seems like a bright young man, lost too soon. I hope his energy and conviction leads others to pick up his fallen torch and finally bring gay men in sports out of the closet.
