Hustler

Hustler isn't necessarily pejorative.

HUSTLER: An aggressively enterprising person; a go-getter.

The term hustler most often does carry pejorative connotations.

Other definitions:

Hustler: "A prostitute who attracts customers by walking the streets."

Hustler: "A shrewd or unscrupulous person who knows how to circumvent difficulties."

Hustle: "An illicit or unethical way of doing business or obtaining money; a fraud or deceit."

...And just like that, Las Vegas made the shortlist for the 2012 Republican Convention!

I've heard stories about male prostitutes in Europe and their availability in brothels giving you the opportunity to socialize and choose one for a private encounter. From what I've seen on Cable a man can do the same in a legal U.S. brothel with a female prostitute. If male brothels became legal I'd much prefer them. Nothing like going to the store and picking out the delicacy you find most appealing. I find the prospect a lot more civilized than the current process.

I wonder about the economic feasibility of male brothels--I mean even with Viagra and it's kin--unless you are one of those lucky guys--how many women--or men can one guy--if he is a top- perform with. Also at the brothels--are the women allowed to kiss the customers--my only knowledge and I have a feeling it's suspect is from the song in Best Little ... in Texas--"No kissing on the mouth. This ain't the senior prom" Also are the women allowed to perform oral--if they are I am assuming it is with a condom on. And do we think an employed male in a brothel will be able to bottom?

Considering all that--not to mention that the brothels seem kind of pricey, I think I am sticking with Rentboy, M4RN and RENTMEN.

There were at elast 3 in Amsterdam in the 80'2 & 90's - usually referred to as 'houses with boys'. I remember settling a tab for '3 cokes and ein junge' (I know that spelling isn't right!). The quailyt of the talent varied widely, and in later years, some of the houses were staffed with Eastern European guys who really only worked there for lack of other options.

The reality for the guys working in these establishments is not so appealing. Typically, they will spend most of the day confined to a small crowded room with their competition. Periodically, there will be a knock on the door signaling that they should pose as a client is going to check them out through the one-way mirror. They may be called out for closer inspection. If they're lucky, they'll be chosen, have a session, shower, then go back to the room. The management takes up to 50% of their fee. It's really best suited to guys who have no other options. The life of an independent escort is infinitely more comfortable and rewarding and this is bound to be reflected in the quality of service they provide.

Mark--I know as of a few years ago there might have still been some male brothels in Australia--to your knowledge are there any left in Europe?

Gman, there is Villa Gianni in London, Boys Club 21 in Amsterdam and American Boys in Barcelona. There are also Houses with Boys in Stuttgart, Cologne, Barcelona and Warsaw. There are saunas frequented by working guys in places like Athens, Barcelona and Zurich. There are bar and street scenes in many other European cities.

The Gaiety came close to this in the "old days". You got to see the boys before hiring and sex happened in the theater! Later, you had to go back to the boy's hotel but that was usually close.

Imagine a gaiety in Las Vegas!!! It would make a fortune if in the right location.

Hustler isn't always associated with prostitutes. There are also "hustler" pool sharks. And a real go-getter is often called a hustler. From my point of view: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but name will never hurt me."

The Power of Words

I haven’t heard that phrase since Grade 4.

Words like john, trick and punter do not always refer to men who hire escorts, but the term client is more respectful. The word hustler has its place and that place is not in reference to all of the guys who advertise on Rentboy.

Words have power. The media wields influence. When I see words used inappropriately in the media, I like to point it out. When I was at university, I was Media Monitor for the Committee on Homophobia.

Aussie Gay Male Brothel

Gar: You are correct about there being at least one gay male brothel in Australia. It's in Melbourne, is appropriately called "Stable Boys" and appears to feature mostly twinks and trannie escorts:

I've heard that even the terms "client" and "escort" are out of date. The proper terminology is "hobbyist" and "provider." "Provider" sounds good to me, but hearing "hobbyist" almost makes me giggle. Female prostitutes in Las Vegas refer to themselves as "working girls" and their clients as "dates," and there's nothing derogatory about either term. Regardless of whatever positive usages or connotations "hustler" may have, if used to refer to escorts, it comes off as very negative.

hobbyist - a person who pursues an activity in their spare time for pleasure

Pursuing ‘the hobby’

Many men make a lifestyle out of patronizing escorts. They call it “the hobby,” not prostitution, and they are “hobbyists,” not johns.

Who knew? Is this originally a straight usage? Maybe I'm just getting old but for me BSR is right, hobbyist sounds so silly. :o Fortunately Google was right on top of it.
