From daddy's news page, an article on mandating condoms in films:

I have always been a supporter of that, but last week picked a bareback film because the cover guys were so appealing. I found myself liking that skin on skin a lot, but not enough for them to die over it. Am I overreacting with a thought like that? Can't we trust the producers to make sure their films are safe to the performers? I wish we could.

I was under the impression that performers in bareback films had to sign some sort of risk related waiver. I could be wrong. I don't think you're overreacting at all. The danger is too great, IMHO, to send anything but one clear signal about safer practices.

Suppose you knew that both performers were HIV+, both were taking protease inhibitors, both had low viral counts, and both were cognizant of each other's status.

Keeping aside the issue of not wanting to promote barebacking in the general population, would that have altered your feelings in watching the flick?

I figured most of those in bareback films already have aids. I personally against making such films. imo promoting bareback sex makes the gay community look uneducated and ignorant.

It seems to be a supply and demand issue. It's my understanding that bareback films are the best selling gay x rated films. Unfortunately I cannot recall the source of this info, so take it with a grain of salt. Setting the risk aside, I do find the BB films more enjoyable. I think because it reminds me of my glory days and romping around at the baths. There's a local escort here that I've wanted to hire, but I've seen him in BB movies and it makes me cautious. I understand that the rule of thumb is to treat all hook-ups as if they're HIV+.

I agree with you. The only way too go is to assume everyone is hiv+

if a escorts done bb films it doesn't really make the ones that haven't any safer because you never know what they are doing at home with their long term partners.

I think Boomer is right on the popularity of BB films. I would never have noticed the one I rented, Bare Play, if the GayMart hadn't set up a special section for BB films.

But, to parse Honcho's post, how far should we go with it? Suppose they are both on protease inhibitors, but one has developed a resistance to one of the drugs. How risky then is that for the other, nonresistant performer?

You think condoms should be mandated in gay porn but you go and purchase a bb film instead? I"m not going to lecture but you do realize how that sounds. I understand visual preferences but why wouldn't you only support the companies that use condoms 100% of the time?

Top 100

I looked at the current top 100 charts. 18 of the top 100 are bb films. 2 are in the top 11

What chart? Is there an on-line link to this chart? I would be very curious to see the top 100 gay DVD's. Thanks.

I don't think sex workers should be exempt from the safety standards we enjoy thanks to OSHA. So I think condoms should be mandatory unless both are HIV+. The catch there is that the lack of condoms would then be disclosing confidential information about the performers, so I guess it needs to be mandatory for all of them.

Move to Require Condoms

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation today will ask state regulators to require the use of condoms during filming of adult films, saying the porn industry is failing to comply with safety rules.

The move is the latest by the group to pressure the industry and government regulators to do more to safeguard the health of performers.

Earlier this year, the foundation sued Los Angeles County, alleging that public health officials had failed to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and enforce laws requiring employers to protect workers against exposure to bodily fluids.

The suit was filed after the disclosure that an adult-film performer had tested positive for HIV.

The foundation said it will argue to the board of the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health that the porn industry should follow the same regulations covering blood-borne diseases as hospitals do.
