I am reading John Grisham's new book "Ford County".. He is such a good story teller. I don't like, however, that most of his characters do not have a good marriage. Is it because he is in that phase of his life? I always wanted to ask why his characters are like that. He came to my area for a book tour but I missed him. Anyways, it is a very interesting book.

I once heard Grisham speak on his plot development and character arcs. He firmly believe's in the "Disney" plot angle (Kill the parents, orphans are more likable). He wants his readers to identify with the characters as being alone. It allows readers to feel the isolation and often desperation of the character. This the happily married character either has to be geographically removed from his support structure or you have to rip the loved ones away (the fugitive, ransom etc...) I believe what you are seeing is the authors way of making the character isolated. Unfortunately, I agree he often does it with ancillary characters that don't need to be so embittered and alone.
