It is scenes such as this one that make this show extraordinary. Rarely an episode goes by that there isnt a memorable moment and this was among the finest moments of this show.

Any Other Opinions?

Far be it from me to disrespect any one else's taste. I too was moved by this scene.

But what I would like to know is, Does anyone else here think the scene was a cliche and a redo of innumerable similar sentimental moments in other films?

In other words, I'm not asking about the scene's heart-tugging aspect, which I felt too, but about the critical observation that the writers are pulling our strings in a superficial sentimental way, rather than in a profound emotional way.

Thoughts?

GP0560 are you saying that the writers of this show have manipulated us into believing that there is something real here when it is only a subterfuge to coerce an emotional response? Who do you think the writers are, members of the former president's administration?

More to the point, of course some moments ring truer than others. The writers used the Home for Wayward Girls and the School of the Deaf in previous episodes as the expected competitors in the sectionals and by name alone, the Glee Club members became overconfident. Once the School for the Wayward Girls performed, it became an issue to the Glee members that they may not have enought sizzle. The School of the Deaf perhaps suggested to them that there is beauty in music and perhaps they don't need the sizzle. In either case, the Glee Club now realizes that they have more competition then they thought they might.

If you use a song such as Imagine, there is a blatant pull at the heartstrings. It may have been less obvious if the Glee Club did not jump in. Still, the scene put a lump in my throat. Now if they could get Puck back in the shower, they can put a lump in my pants. (BTW the actor playing Puck is 28)

PK,

Had to laugh at the presidential reference! But no, I don't think "manipulated," "subterfuge," or "coerce" have anything to do with what I meant to say. It's just that there are standard, stock, conventional elements in any genre. Authors can use narration conventions with greater or lesser effect. At worst, the effect is (please don't be offended) "sloppy" sentimentality; at best, the effect is powerfully emotional. Think of the standard boy meets, loses, gets girl/guy story. Some are like any Hugh Grant movie, others are like a Jane Austen novel. In sculpture, think of any common garden statuary vs Rodin. In opera, think of Amy Grant vs Puccini.

So did the Glee writers actually set out to coerce an emotional response? I think "coerce" is far too strong a word. And I probably went wrong by saying "pulling our strings." The writers set out to elicit the response, is how I would phrase it. Did they know they were using a stock scene? Dunno, depends on their background.

Finally, please let me repeat that I too was moved by the scene, regardless of the "cunning" intentions of the writers. I can be moved by such a scene and the same time recognize that the scene makes heavy use of a literary convention.

First off I am sorry that it seems the music video link has been taken off of youtube :( But the emotion of the music, lyrics, and arrangement remain the same.

I initially posted the link to the video, not as anything relating to the back story of what was going on in the show. I thought as a video it could stand alone. For those that want to see it - look to hulu.com. At the 41 minute mark there is a nice rendition of "True Colors" - though it lacked the emotion of "Imagine" that one can see at the about 31 minute mark on hulu.

I posted the link to "Imagine" as a stand alone music video - no agenda from writers... Sort of like a Coke commercial IIRC that had folks sing around a Christmas Tree many years ago. OK I am a sap here :) It would have only taken one person singing out like in this video to have had me up on that stage with that group.

My signing friends shed a few tears as well over this video. Their comment is that we in the "hearing world" - never hear the true meaning behind the lyrics. Guess that is why I was so moved by it. They loved the fact the "actors" were trying to following the signing - kudos to the directors!

In the end some of us look at Glee as a time to enjoy the story lines - but in the end to find a "music video" that sings to us. :)

Jennifer Holiday must be proud after last nights performance of I tell You I Am Not Going... bring her on for the revival of Dream Girls!

I saw Jennifer Holiday on SNL doing the same song way back when... was moved then - but maybe more so now
