Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcien has vetoed a bill that aimed to give same-sex couples the right to plan the funerals of their deceased partners.

IMO, this is just downright homophobia. He stated that the bill was "a disturbing trend towards the erosion of heterosexual marriage" and said the decision should be left up to the voters.

That is just crazy. How does this affect hetero marriage? It doesn't. A person should be able to designate whoever he wishes to arrange his/her funeral. What if he has no family and no partner? Can a friend then make the arrangements? So what is the difference if the friend is a "closer" friend? If you state in your will who is to make you arrangements, should that not suffice?

He further stated in a letter to lawmakers, "If the General Assembly believes it would like to address the issue of domestic partnerships, it should place the issue on the ballot and let the people of the State of Rhode Island decide"

Evidently this bill would require couples to be in a relationship for at least one year and meet other criteria, such as owning property together.

What a load of crap. A hetero couple can get married after being in a relationship for only a few days and can plan each others funerals even if they are only renting their home.

I get so crazy when I hear this type of rhetoric my blood pressure soars to dangerous levels. And it doesn't even affect me personally. Someone should shoot the bastard!

Careful, zip. This post may trigger a visit from Homeland Security.

Yeah - I wondered about that. Hope they send their hunkiest. Do they really operate north of the border?

They're everywhere.

What really surprises me is that no one has commented on the article about the homophobic Governor. Is everybody OK with his discrimination?

It is Rhode Island. What do you expect?

Their governor is proof of how Mencken defined democracy: "the theory that the people know what they want -- and they deserve to get it good and hard."

Ah! A new Site Motto!

No, he has simply vetoed a bill that would automatically give the right to partners to make funeral arrangements, absent any other legal documents designating a planner. His reason for the veto is what is maddening. It could not affect any other legal arrangements you made concerning your funeral.

Ah ok thanks for the clarification Charlie. Luckily I live in a reasonable state and once registered we have the same rights as married couples do. I hope that the gays in Rhode Island aren't going to stand for this and raise a ton of hell and come election time the dear governor will be standing in the unemployment line.

No, but I think people may be even less ok with your solution of assassinating the person you disagree with you. That's far more disturbing.

I'm sure nobody took that comment seriously - it just a way of saying how much I disagree with his outlook. However if you are gullible enough to think I really meant it, you can always phone him to warn him about the crazy Canuck.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEHR’-ee), a gay marriage opponent, has opened the door slightly to the limited recognition of same-sex relationships in Rhode Island.

The Republican governor still opposes gay marriage and said during the 2006 election that he opposed civil unions for same-sex couples.

But after a closed-door meeting with a gay rights group, Carcieri told reporters Thursday he would consider creating a domestic partnership system similar to one approved this month by voters in Washington state. That Washington plan will allow same-sex couples benefits such as the right to use sick leave to care for a domestic partner and rights related to adoption, child custody and child support.

Rhode Island’s most vocal gay rights group has been lobbying exclusively for gay marriage.

It seems that he has relented slightly on this subject - but only after the stink that occurred when he vetoed the bill giving gays the right to arrange their partners funeral. It would be interesting to know exactly what was said in that "closed door meeting".

I just think we have to be careful not to demonize our opponents and make those kinds of comments. Careful, constructive dialogue is the answer not remarks that suggest what you did, whether in jest or not.
