Sorry to hear about this problem which I did not encounter. It's certainly not my intent to spread Trojan Horses. I'll quote the overview:

"Under the Canadian Criminal Code:

(1) The act of prostitution is legal, i.e. you CANNOT be arrested for being a prostitute

(2) The practice of independent outcall prostitution is fully protected by Federal law. Third party involvement in solicitation of business or profiting from it is a crime But enforcement varies widely since the attitude is to support individual rights as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

(3) Advertising in public print is protected as a right of free speech which has been upheld by the Canadian Supreme Court. Advertising on television has not yet been tested but the issue is whether its in line with community standards.

(4) An independent outcall escort has the right to discuss specific acts of sex for money in private. Hotel rooms, telephones and private homes. The Canadian Supreme court has ruled that a land based telephone is a private communication. When one places a phone call, they have a reasonable expectation of privacy, and that is the test. The same is easily extended to cellular phone communication. One would have to have special equipment to intercept such communication."

Zipper, somehow I doubt that any country so civilized as to provide sex workers as part of the support package for its disabled citizens is going to get all that worked up over a bit of discrete prostitution. :p Just stands to reason.

I'm getting more educated every day. Sex workers as part of a support package for the disabled?

Where are you getting this info - and where do I apply (should I ever become disabled)?

  • 3 weeks later...

I didn't really want to revive this thread, but the new issue of Vanity Fair has an article on how the Boston craigslist killer was found, using cyber footprints, but also mentions in passing that "Hotel security services routinely monitor Craigslist to see how much of the erotic trade they are attracting."

Since this point was raised, and mocked, here I just wanted to point out that VF didn't find it such a far fetched idea. The idea that the hotels would devote that kind of manpower to this issue seems a bit much, and I know that just because it is in Vanity Fair doesn't make it true. But it could be...

Escorts for the disabled in Canada

Liberal though our laws & social assistance provisions are in comparison with the US, I don't believe we're providing sex workers for the disabled as yet. You may have misunderstood some websites which discuss providing escorts for the disabled. What they are referring to are people who help the disabled with their special needs while travelling.

:o You are exactly right! :D Oh, well, another balloon popped before its time. Sigh.

Zipperzone, I think I owe you a retraction. They help disabled folks onto airplanes but their other "special needs" are strictly self-help.

While one can never be faulted for being cautious about things like personal security, I find the account related to the OP by his friend difficult to swallow. I commend the OP for sharing the information here, for he seems to have done so with the best of intentions, but I don't believe that it's an accurate reflection of any ongoing program in the Boston Police Department.

Regarding hotels, the staffs at any hotel have seen everything; trust me on this. They also know a great deal about their clients and this goes double or triple or more for chains with which one is a frequent guest. I would not be surprised in the least if hotel security staffs monitored Craigslist, since it's a hot topic these days and no hotel wants to be the site of another murder. Nevertheless, I highly doubt that any major hotel is going to be involved in any ongoing program that involves spying on its guests.

If the police come to a hotel with regard to a particular occupant, that's a different matter and most hotels are likely to cooperate. Why wouldn't they? But that's a very different thing than a program of spying on guests for the sheer purpose of supporting a sting on escorts -- which in many jurisdictions is likely to be a misdemeanor. The very last thing any hotel wants to have is a reputation as a place you cannot trust.
