I was looking for something on Austin, but I couldnt find much of anything about where to stay, good spots etc. I was invited down by a friend of mine last weekend but just decided not to make the trip til later. I've also had lots of people tell me I should check it out. People I've met from Austin seem nicer than where I am anyhow. So Im going to try it out.

I've actually found this to be helpful when going to certain places (thanks to you who are...always going on journeys) ;) I dont need specific names of hotels, just parts of town that are good. What do you think?

I found the best spot in Austin Texas is any road heading out of town.

Dont tell me that! Im trying to find the nearest place out of DFW besides the airport atleast, ATLEAST to have a couple of days break LOL. Oh and you're from Jersey, I dont expect anyone from the northeast to like Texas!

Austin can be a cool place with great food and live music. Recommend the Hotel San Jose as a funky option to stay and the restaurant, East Side Cafe, is not to be missed (located on Manor road, east of I35). You can catch some good music on 6th street in many bars, depending on your taste in music. Go catch some exercise in Zilker park for fun, stretch your legs, and good eye candy. Hope you have a great trip!

I live in Southern California and as a general rule do not much care for Texas. The one MAJOR exception to that statement is Austin. If Southern California was not my home and where my family and my friends live I would move to Austin in a heartbeat. It is a great city. The thing that makes it so atypical of Texas is that it is both the state capitol and the home of the University of Texas. Austin is the only political liberal area in the entire state and has even elected an openly gay representative to the state legislature. The city has an active cultural life centered around the university, it has many fantastic restaurants and is a genuinely attractive city. If you are looking for a hotel try Hotwire and book a room in a hotel in the “Downtown Austin & Town Lake Area”. I will be there the end of September and by booking through Hotwire ended up with the Radisson Hotel Suites (3½ stars) on Congress Avenue at the Congress Bridge – a great location within walking distance a numerous restaurants and the State Capitol complex. I am paying $89.00 a night.

If you have any other questions feel free to private me and I will be happy to help you in any way I can. You are really going to love it there – believe me!!!!!

wow; all of that just makes me want to start packing my bags right now LOL. I'll have to keep Congress Avenue in mind for when I head down. Hopefully I'll find more to like than here. Of course I have to see for myself, thats the only way I can decide if I like it. Coming from Florida 2 or 300 miles can make a big difference, so Im hoping that Texas might be as forgiving

At this point my hopes are pretty high; I've already met good people from there over here so more than likely there will be some common ground. And I know there's some locals right here on this forum who's been to Austin and can tell me something. They might as well just speak up already LOL...
