right on time

Aren't you a week early?

I think that I was right on time. Bastille Day is July 14th and at the time of posting (after midnight) it was already July 14th in France. I hope that makes sense.

Probably you're confusing it with the Belgian National Day - July 21st.

Bastille Day has always been celebrated on July 14 in Boston. In fact, they make a big thing of it. They re-enact the storming of the Bastille, using the French Library. When I lived in Boston, it cost at least $100 to particpate. That did include champagne, caviar and other goodies. Ironically, this price was for the nobility, not the peasants. The peasants just hung around the street near the French Library. I believe there were cheaper goodies available.

I have an annual ritual to celebrate the occasion. I blast the Telarc CD (1988) of the Berlioz rendition of La Marseillaise. It's the best I've ever heard. There are different variations, performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The chorus and solists are first rate. It's rousing and powerful. It's the type of piece that needs to be played loud, like the 1812 Overture.

Yes, I thought you were Belgian... I highly recommend the comedy Murder by Death. One of my favorite lines is when the Hercule Poirot character says "I'm not a Frenchie, I'm a Belgie!" Well, sir, you are not a Frenchie, but a Belgie! The National Holiday you should be observing is the 21st! :-)
